    5 pin USB cable?

Received my Antec Mini P180 today, just checking it over and it has 5 pin USB cables for the front USB ports, however the manual states that it should have the standard 10 pin connector with the blocked port. Can I just attach these cables anyway, which side of the USB header and can I use a single USB header?

yes and yes, just make sure you check the mobo book for the correct outputs.

Yep I had the same question with my Antec900v1. I just connected them according to the mobo manual, works perfectly.

Yeah should work fine - as mentioned above check your manual to see header pinouts

Edit: The pinouts are also available on this page: http://www.frontx.com/cpx108_2.html

    Re: 5 pin USB cable?

Thanks all, I didn't want to rush in and just connect them up and kill my Ipod.

Watercooled thanks for the great link, its now a bookmark in my Hardware folder. My main concern was I had 2x5 pins and only 9 on the mobo header so one Shield being unconnected, that page sorted me out.

Hopefully will get time to do the install over the weekend and I'll put some pictures up, so far like the feel of the case and the Tricool fans don't seem as loud on low as I thought they would be.

    No worries
The missing pin is there to stop you getting the USB/front panel audio connectors mixed up I think because it's blocked off on the plug too so would be impossible to plug in without breaking something.

I got my mini p180 case yesterday and just mailed ebuyer about this!
Could someone explain what goes where for the less able
I can see in the mobo manual pin layout where ground is, but which connector goes on the top and which the bottom (they go into the same usb connector I assume?)

    thanks very much

    Re: 5 pin USB cable?

The header on the motherboard should be 5x2 with one pin missing. The pin next to the missing pin (on the other set of 5) is shield so shield from the cable goes to that one - no connectors should be unconnected.
For the second one you have a choice - leave the shield unconnected and connect it next to the first one with shield missing or if you want to play it safe and have the shield connected (I'm not sure if it makes a difference either way TBH) just do the same on another USB 5x2 header so all the pins are connected.
    Hope this helps

I think I'm with you, the plugs are marked as follows (sorry, I want to be sure i don't blow the thing up )

(imagine the blue and red in separate columns, I couldn't get them to line up)

    2.0 USB 1 2.0 USB2

    VCC1 VCC2
    DATA-1 DATA-2
    DATA+1 DATA+2
    GND1 GND2
    SHIELD1 SHIELD2

    1) Connect 2.0 USB 1 (blue) cable, shield to shield(GND in mobo manual) next to missing pin.

    2) do the same with the 2nd cable USB 2(red) to a seperate USB connector on mobo to play safe...

or plug in parallel into the same usb mobo pins matching SHIELD2 to GND (in effect the same orientation as the first but in parallel with it)

have I just made that sound totally confused?

    Re: 5 pin USB cable?

Yeah, that's spot on but beware GND isn't technically the same thing as shield but it's probably just a mistake in the manual - there's only one of them on each header for reference.
