Laptop refuses to shutdown or switch off.

I just got a phonecall from a very nervous friend having problems with her laptop. After selecting 'shut down', the usual shutdown screen appears. Unfortunately, the laptop seems to be frozen at this screen and has been like that for an hour now. It won't switch off, and there's no reset button on the laptop. She's using a Tiny brand laptop running windows xp sp2. She hasn't connected it to the internet yet so I am assuming it isn't exactly a spyware problem. She's going to leave the batteries to run out.
I'm sorry about not providing more specific details about the laptop, but I'm afraid I haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet and my friend is not exactly comfortable with technology.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hold the power button down for 4-5 seconds. Forces a power down.

In that case, undo the catch on the base of the laptop and slide the battery out, there' (usually) not integrated as part of the laptop.
