Unhappy DVD Writer "Track following error"

I have recently acquired a new DVD writer, my 4th in so many years.

It has been burning without problems for the last couple of days, however today it has been consistantly failing the burning process (at both 4x and 8x [using 8x Datasafe Discs]), as indicated in the Nero LOG below.

DMA is enabled (ignore the generic DVD-Rom, it is an emulator) on both the HDD and DVD Writer.

I am trying to just burn some anime avi's to the discs, in data mode, and have tried burning different files from different locations on the HDD.

Has anyone got any idea why this might be happening?

actually, i havent, because I only have datasafe discs on me at the moment. I am going to pick up some different discs from the media office in a bit...

i have been using datasafe discs for something like 4 or 5 years, without problems, and it just seems bizzare that my new HP drive doesnt like them. (not to mention it was burning datasafe discs happily earlier)

it surely cant be firmware, (although I will see about updating it all the same), and from what I have seen around in posts i get the impression that it is likely hardware.

Datasafe will use whatever dye they have, the dye can even vary from the same pack. Have you checked the mid on these discs?

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago when trying to burn a particular file(s) to DVD. Used a different DVD from another pack after two aborted attempts and it worked first time after that...

I have located two other kinds of DVD+R discs (though they are both verbatim), and both have burnt without problems.

It looks like the media was the problem after all, so it looks like you were right, Max Tractor.

It also looks like I have almost 100 blank datasafe discs that I cannot depend on

I hope that this is the end of the matter, thanks very much for your helpful advice! I was rather quick to assume the worst!

Certain brands use junk dye, they buy B/C/D/E Landfill, discs from the big manufacturers, overprint them, and sell them on as there own brand, it has been going on for years. Stick to Taiyo Yuden/Verbatims (MIJ) Stuff from Taiwan can be ok, Indian verbs can be questionable at times. Check over on cdfreaks media section and see what brand are using TY at any particular time
