| DVD decoding requires a patent license from the MPEG Licensing Authority, which costs money. Generally, you install a paid DVD player application which contains the required codecs (e.g. PowerDVD) or use a patent-violating player like VLC. Or, as killie99 suggested, you get a warezed codec. |

| You have always had to pay for a DVD codec/player as its down to dobly etc license which the programmers must pay to use. Usually you pick one up with you machine or DVD drive. Scan sell the nvidia codec or powerdvd/windvd for a few pounds for 2.1 or more for full 5.1 and even more for DTS. |

| Network|Geek | Theres news, I never know it violated any patents, I guess its because it can playback certain formats without additional plugins, and is free? If it's patent violating, and rather well known - how does it still exist, can anything be done about it? "If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much room!" - me, 2005 |

VLC continues to exist partly because nobody's gone after it (patents must be actively protected, they don't just happen), and partly because it's developed in so many different countriesd with different policies towards patents that it'd be an absolute nightmare to even try & shut them down i'm not saying i don't use VLC, but it does all sorts of unlicensed things like region-free DVD playback. |

| VLC FTW IMO (wow look how short I can make a sentance) There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't. Use the best: Linux for servers, Mac for graphics, Windows for Solitaire |
