Would you ever buy a new car

After seeing a few threads posted on here over the weekend i'm interested to find out how many of you would actually spend 13K on a Yaris T-Sport etc, To me that sounds like a waste of money especially considuring what other cars you could get for that sort of money.

I would put a poll up but for the fact I want you justify why you would or wouldn't do it, IS it just about money or do people still like the prestige of a new car (MUGS imo )

i wouldnt - bar for getting a company car i think i'd much prefer to spend half as much on a car thats 2 years older, and blow the rest on a bigger telly and beer

If i could afford it i would buy a new car when i am in a full time job in a few years. However i do see the benefit in getting a car thats only like 1 registration plate old, and in an example of cars that are sold new £30k +, they all of a sudden become reasonable value

My mum and dad like to buy a new car about once every 5 years or so. They like the 3 years warranty because it always been beneficial to them, they like the free insurance offer...to them tho driving is about getting from 'A' to 'B' not about what car it is.

Hmmmm, there was a bit of a display thing on in MK opposite John Lewis's and I found myself sat in an RX8. Was sat doing the maths for some time.....

I suppose a lot depends on how much you like the particular car - For example, if it's a performance car, can you be certain that the previous owner has thrashed it from cold? Or let the turbo get red hot and then switched off? Or slid the car down the side of the road on it's side and then had it repaired?

If I was buying performance, I'd sooner know the ENTIRE history of the vehicle - but I'm terribly sad and geeky like that - I kept every single receipt, for every single item (including fuel) for my first cappo.

the only single reason i would buy a new car is for free insurance. obviously being able to tailor your car and choose exactly what you want is nice, but not worth it.

Personally I'd buy a nearly-new car from a dealer, maybe an 02/52. They'll more than likely have slashed a grand or two off to shift stock. Also sometimes, depending on the dealer, you can still add extras to it.

the pro's to buying as new care are: larger warrenty ( if its not "perfect" shoudl should make it so ), choice of factory fitted options rather than having to hunt around. I suppose the free insurance deals etc. can make it sweeter ( esp if someone else is paying for it !)

as just about everyone else has said, I'd get a yr old car instead.

Yes, my next car will be new. As i am looking for a new/nearly newcar, and the new Micra is available with 0% finance, and first years free insurance, it was much cheeper to buy this car than a 6-12 month old one.

Yes but look at one which is 2 years old (if they exist) it will be even cheaper.

I thnk people do buy new cars for the 'ego' factor, right up until they hit the point of more money than sense and buy new cars such as sports cars - then they tend to not care about the depreciation. I have a friend, he has a Diablo SV, a new 307CC, and a brand new M3. He doesn't care about the depreciation on any of these since if you have the money to buy one you can in theory lose the money.

I'd never buy a brand new car since they lose 25% of their value in just driving them off the forecourt! I'd only buy a car that was at least 2 years old.

This is a good point...if you have the money to not worry about depreciation then its probably a good/nice thing to do especially if you like cars. If money is a big issue (as it is for most people on this forum i am sure) then 2nd hand can give you that car of your dreams at half the price...am i right?

TBH I wouldn't buy a new car unless I'd won the lottery or something, and even then I'd only do it if I couldn't find a decent example of the car secondhand. I'm pretty poor, but even if I weren't I would buy a car that was less than 5 or 6 years old. Modern cars go on and on unless they're abused, but generally a 5-6 year old car is probably only worth 25-35% of the new price. My current car is 15 years old.

No, especially considering the great warrentys you can get from dealerships these days.

Buying a new car also isnt worth it purely for the depreciation of value within 6 - 12 months.

If I had the money then yes without a doubt I would buy new cars and I don't belive anyone else would do otherwise. As soon as I win the lottery I am off to the Audi dealership to buy a RS6 mmmmmmm

Loaded = Yes but only a 911 because they hold their value so well it's cheaper to run each year than my Honda Civic (with exception to the insurance ofc) and depeciates far less.
Friend of a friend owns 911's and changes them ever year. Reckons that running costs without petrol and insurance and including depreciation is about £1000.

Reality = Never, if I ever spend more than £10grand on a car there needs to be a damn good reason for it! (hell you can get sooo much car for that kinda cash!)

yes i would buy a new car, but i'd get every ounce of performance for every penny spent, theres no way on gods earth (even tho i like em) i'd sepnd 13k on a t-sport yaris when i could get so much more for same price (insert 172 here)
