Re: The old M3
The m3s I've heard do sound a bit rough when pushing hard, to the outsider at least. But then today I heard the most glorious note I've ever heard, but it was from a bike so I don't think I'll ever aspire to getting a car with a terrific sound. Astons are ok, Ferrari's are very distinctive indeed, but not exactly 'nice'.
On hot hatches vs larger cars.. I have to say that where I once couldn't see how anyone would want to pay more for anything bigger than a small hatch, something's kind of happened as I've gotten older and I can't stand driving any car smaller than my mk 4 astra anymore. Even now I'm almost itching for something with a bit more quality and refinement. I don't know where it's come from - performance/simplicity was all I ever wanted before. |

Re: The old M3
The m3 has a raspy note its true.
Maybe due to the fact its a high reving n/a engine which has been tuned substatially. Or maybe its a mix of the exahust system and the filters they ship with.. |

Re: The old M3
You want good noise, you need V8, it's a simple as that.
The best notes I've ever heard came out the arse of an MG B GT V8, sounded so good it was amazing. The Big Yank V8s do it nicely too. |

Re: The old M3
There's different noises though.
My A3 used to sound good, but that was more the sound of the enclosed induction sucking half the ozone in at high revs! Had a performance exhaust on it (Not chav big bore but S3 spec) and used to growl nicely. V8s however, especially with little silencing, sound like god clearing his throat and singing we wil rock you. It's pure sex in musical terms, the Rover 3.5 is one of the finest. Listen to this, especially if you have good speakers YouTube - Land Rover 110 Pick Up 0-60 run EFi 4.6 stage 3 V8 That's a true noise! |
