Fine, I'll take that part back but I still think he should just accept it, he knows he was illegally parked and is trying to wriggle out it. I've had 2 parking tickets, one my own fault which I accepted and the other was farcical but I still had to pay up.

    From Which:

    http://www.which.co.uk/advice/how-to...faqs/index.jsp

Wrong details on the parking ticket
My parking ticket doesn't include the correct registration number for my car. Can I appeal?

    Answer
When issuing a parking ticket, parking attendants must record a number of details, including the registration number of the vehicle.
If key details such as the registration number are recorded incorrectly, the parking ticket is invalid.

However, if the parking ticket error is slight – such as the vehicle colour noted as being grey instead of silver – this alone is unlikely to invalidate the parking ticket.

So to all the pay up and shut group, and assuming Which? have got it right, I assume you now think that the fine shouldn't be paid? After all, the council didn't do what they were supposed to............

Its not about the ticket being valid, he parked illegally and is now whining because he got caught. Anyone in that position should just get over it and pay it even if there happens to be an ever so slight error on the ticket, surely its the moral, mature thing to do. We really are turning into a neverland of spoilt children.

Oh I see, so while we (The public) are supposed to follow the rules and never make ever so slight errors when it comes to parking, the organisations that enforce the rules don't even need to follow their own procedures that they put in place?

We could post pages about this and never agree. I simply think that when you knowingly take the risk of parking illegally and are caught you should just deal with it. As I posted a few back, I was once booked in utterly farcical circumstances but my appeal was turned down and I just had to get on with it and put it down to experience, these things happen.

If you call the police because you've been burgled they are not there in 5 hours, never mind 5 minutes, yet you can be sure you will have got a ticket in that time if you are parked illegally.

Councils would rather direct resources hunting down 'criminals' who stay too long in a parking bay instead of using them to tackle those who are causing serious crime.

That's why the legal system is shat, not because some of us expect those who enforce the law to follow their own bloody rules.

You do not have to pay it.

If they run the registration through their database they wont get your name and address, as its an invalid reg.

This same thing happened to a relative of mine, not only did they get the reg wrong, but they got the colour wrong too, making it an invalid PCN.

I for one hate the system we have, its unjust. My mothers car was towed a few weeks ago, they charged her £260, there was no need to tow the car away, and they should by their own law have waited 30 minutes before towing, which they didn’t. The company who towed it away was a dodgy sub contractor to the local council. I am still contesting that one!

Quite right. I don't think I'll ever agree that Joe Public must always obey all the rules, no matter how silly or unreasonable, while those who put the rules in place can ignore, cherry pick and ride roughshod over them whenever they see fit.

When the councils start spending some of the money they get from PCN's on fixing more of the bloody potholes in the road, as they are supposed to, then I'll be more supportive of them. Whilst they use them as cash cows to invest in Icelandic banks, I won't.

Disbute it all the way, i did when they ticked both the £50 & £70 options. I called them up and after 2 promises to get back to me i was told they ''think i have to pay £35''.

After that i used a parking ticket forum (linked below) and they drafted i letter i should send, basically saying that as an incorrect amount has been charged (£110) i didnt have to pay it. They sent an e-mail back saying fair enough, off you go.

Do you have to pay it?
No. I think's it's clear that if you disbuted it, you would win.

    Should you pay it?
No; your missus should if it's her fault! Be sure to remind her of it at every argument for not listening to you. This should ensure a long and happy relationship.

Get on Pepipoo to be sure, but I'd be inclined to just stick it in a drawer if the numberplate's recorded wrong. They may have photographs, but at the end of the day the PCN's invalid.

    You can:

Pay up and get it over and done with, and make a mental note to park correctly next time

Ignore it and hope that there isn't a photograph - if there is, be prepared to go to court to fight t

Dispute it now, which is tantamount to admitting that it is yoiur car that is parked there,m and again be prepared to go to court to dispute it.

Without knowing the precise details, in general if you do nothing, after a certain period of time the penalty usually doubles, and if your lose in court, the fine can be higher still.

Your call. If you want professional advice - see a lawyer.

Is YOUR system up to Folding?

Someone didn't do their job properly and you want to pay them anyway? What kind of world do we live in, where the council can use taxpayers money to hire an incompetent moron to go around demanding money with menaces?

Appeal, and get the idiot fired!

Who cares about if you were parked wrong? This about taking pride in doing a job properly!

Councils are entirely seperate from the Police. The enforcing of parking restrictions has no bearing what so ever on Police action, or lack of.

sorry I should've been clearer in the post, I know the police are separate from the council and that they are not funded by local authorities. Apologies if it seemed I was implying that.

The 5 minute/ 5 hour comment was in regards to why the law is shat. Regardless of who is enforcing which laws, It is surely issues such if you are burgled you wait ages for someone to see you, yet if you overstay your parking space by 6 minutes they are round your car like flies round sh*t that makes the law shat, not someone appealing a parking ticket because the council didn't do their job properly?

The sentence you quoted however stands. Councils may not actually pay for the police per say, but they can (or should I say are supposed to) play an important role in helping keep the streets safer by setting aside funds for anti crime initiatives, community support officers and even (as was the case where I live) providing the funding for 2 full time policeman to walk the big local council estate. Incidently they withdrew the funding for the policemen a while back (The election had been and gone I suppose) and before anyone makes a connection between that and lack of money from PCN's/ Parking, income from parking has gone up from £6m quid in 04 to £8m last year where I live.

I think we have got our priorities all wrong. (I'm pretty sure this is venturing onto a thread all on it's own )
