Had one next to me on the commute this morning. They're HUGE. Didn't look too bad - no worse than a bunch of other BMWs at least, just large.

I like it - I think overall it has quite a nice flow to the design; it looks quite graceful.

Re: What's your opinion of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo?

What is it with BMW getting different people to design a part of a car each, in isolation, then just putting them together to see what they get.

I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve with the 5 Series GT though, it has a weird boot that opens as both a saloon and hatch, two single comfy rear seats, posh taxi maybe ?

In a lot of ways I prefer the Multipla, at least Fiat just said, Hey it's a people carrier, no point trying to make it pretty, just make it functional. That Chevvy looks like so many other people carriers, basically it's a van/minibus with bits on to make it look less like it should have "Private Hire Only" written on the doors. As for the Subaru pictured, when did they get bought by Proton ?

While I hate the implications I REALLY like the X6. I shouldn't I realise but it's BMW's own baja buggy and I can just see myself barreling over sanddunes in one.

As for the GT it's full-on fugly.
The Mondeo works round the front lights because they're angled back and open out the face of the car. It works better at the back too because it has a proper notchback.
The GT's lights run into a Corolla-facelift of a pair of granny glasses with the up-turned edges (due on the next 5-series), run down standard BMW flanks into a roll-backed rear that Porsche have similarily poorly executed on the Panamera.

Funny thing is my parents are their ideal customer and they really don't like it lol

BTW on the subject of Subaru have you seen the new Legacy?!

Looks like it's trying to be a Vauxhall or maybe a Citroen C5 (which in turn are both trying to look like a beemer). It's not great but at least they didn't go with Proton styling again.

Finding the direction of BMW design a bit strange, but nowhere near as dissapointing as the direction the "M" people are heading.

Plastering the badges over almost every model produced, and then the abomination that is the X6M.

Still, at least it doesn't look as bland as the Impreza, eh?

Remember when the E60 was first released and BMW said "In the future, all cars will be designed like this"? Oh, how the Clarkson Crew did laugh.

Now look at all the comparisons we get.

I actually liked the E60 from the start. It was a little odd at first but then I grew to like it more.

Personally, I think the GT looks lumpy from the front, but not too bad. But the back looks like the old 3 series compact, which is not good. It looks stumpy, like a meat cleaver has chopped off the back end, or it's been shunted and the back has crumpled up.

Granted, with blanked out rear windows and a louvred panel where the rear windscreen sits, on massive mud tyres and big springs, it would look the absolute tits, but parked up outside Tesco it just looks stupid...

Re: What's your opinion of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo?

Had one of these parked outside of my house the other week, they are truly ugly.

However they are a great car from what I gather, drive very well, give a slightly elevated driving position, masses of room inside and very high quality.

The 'double boot' also means they can take an awful lot of load without being an estate.

Get used to the front end though. That is exactly what the next generation 5 will have.

And yes it is a trillion times better looking that the X6.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?
