Unhappy Clio Cup racer dies :(

Saw it on the TV today, Renault Sport have just made an official announcement.

    Details here:

    Posted - 31 May 2004 : 17:40:29
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you who may not have read our official statement regarding the tragic incident involving much-loved Clio Cup competitor Kevin Lloyd at the weekend, please see below:

Renault UK, the British Automobile Racing Club and Thruxton Circuit very much regrets to announce, following a racing accident during Saturday’s ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup race at the Hampshire venue, much-loved competitor Kevin Lloyd succumbed to his injuries, despite immediate attention from the circuit’s four doctors.

Kevin, who was 43-years old and leaves behind wife Sandra and two children, had been a regular fixture in the Clio Cup paddock since he first became associated with the category as a driver sponsor two years ago before turning his hand to racing himself towards the end of the 2002 season.

His first full season of racing came in 2003 when he competed with his close friend Lee Brookes’ Total Control Racing team. While his sheer size meant he would never challenge at the front of the pack, Kevin didn’t care. He was in the Clio Cup for one reason and one reason only, to enjoy himself.

This year, he’d opted to have even more fun by setting up his own Kal-Tec team – named after his Wolverhampton-based company – and was his usual, jovial self ahead of the ninth race of the season which, very sadly, proved to be his last.

In a sport which many can often take far too seriously, Kevin was the proverbial breath of fresh air and was a true friend to many within not just the Renault paddock but also the British Motorsport scene as a whole. He will be sorely missed by all involved with the ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup, his close friends and, of course, his family.

In tribute, Renault UK Motorsport Manager Tim Jackson commented: “It is with deep regret we make this announcement today and on behalf of Renault UK, the BARC and Thruxton Circuit, I wish to extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to Kevin’s family and friends.

“Kevin was a unique character, not just in the Renault paddock but through the whole of British Motorsport. He competed every race weekend with the sole aim of having fun and this he achieved while also making many good friends along the way.

“I’m sure I speak for everyone who knew Kevin when I say we will all sorely miss him and it’s with great sadness we announce the passing of a truly great sportsman, competitor and inimitable character.”
    RIP

    Yup, was on the saturday.
We attended yesterday and they held a 1minute silence before the race.

Good to hear about a driver racing for fun, not necessarily money or fame.

Made it a little subdued after that, but still a good day.

    RIP Kevin.

echoing others comments basically - it brings things home that Motor Sport does have its risks , and no matter what steps you take to minimise those risks you can't get rid of them all.
