    Insurance No Claims?

    Right..

At the moment I'm a named driver on both my parents cars, obviously this isn't giving me any no claims, if I took out my own insurance cover, does it have to be to a certain level (fully comp?) to earn the no claims bonus?

No, even third party only cover earns you exactly the same no claims.

As far as im aware you can only have one insurance policy per car so if you were to do that then your mum would need to be a named driver on your policy.

Only one person can insure a car mate. If you are going to insure car with Mum as named driver this is fine. But it is impossible if you are hoping to insure said car simultaneously with yer mum... HTH

you can only insure a vehicle once AFAIK - taking out the second policy would invalidate the first I think.

Get your mum to switch to direct line - named drivers can earn NCD ( although most likley they'll only honor it if you then take out your own insurance with direct line :S )

If you've been driving a while you may get a fair bit off anyway.

When I took out my own policy I had been a named driver for four years. During this time I didn't have any accidents, so my insurers gave me a 25% no claims discount despite not having an actual No-Claims-Bonus.

i've not seen a policy to cover you on a car you dont own. i'm sure some exist but you have to be the named owner in most cases.

direct line let you 'earn' noclaims as a 2nd named driver at the mo- get yermum to switch to them and pay the difference

Direct Line isn't worth it, their no claims for named drivers isn't honoured by anyone else which forces you to sign up with them on your own policy if you want to use your "no claims".

BMW/Tesco insurance on a new mini cooper, chilli pack, etc £600 fully comp.. direct line? £1500..

    *&$* off...

Seriously, how old is this thread?

I've got one. But it's not a generic policy.

I have looked at directline now for my parents renewal and its pretty competitive. When I move out and my parents will need a second car it will be worth my father haivng a bonus with directline than no no claims with someone else i reckon (he is a named driver atm).

I think car insurance is such a black art you should never discount any company or never think that someone is the best ever.

Quinn direct have been mentioned as a cheap insurer here many times - in the quotes i did today they asked 411 quid when everyone else asked between 175 and 250. You just have to try a few.

Direct line good tho Stoo, Ive been a named driver for 2 years, as I couldnt afford the 1330 a year they wanted 3rd party, but I could afford the 600 a year named driver.

2 years down the line I have 2 years no claims, going to get my own car with no 2 yrs no claims and get it third party, so it will have saved me a load (Even tho this year will be a fair whack)

Then, I belive once I have a years *proper* no claims there transferable, so should be able to get 3 years no claims from any company Next year at least

I've already looked into it, and they really aren't good - I'd have to get my parents to swap insurers, add me in as their named driver (I'm currently near free on their existing policy), then drive for another couple of years on it, then get my own policy with direct line to take advantage of it..

It really doesn't add up chap..

Can you not transfer it? Once youve completed a year of proper driving and got no claims, after youve been a named driver? Thats how I read it anyway, as I dont mind being with direct line as it will be cheaper for me, dont really want to be stuck with them for the rest of my life tho!
