Car Insurance / NCB.. a joke

Is it me, or are insurance companies taking the complete **** with the whole concept of insurance and NCB?

It was bad enough with the 10 month bonus accelerators, I now see Norwich Union has a similar scheme that runs for 9 months!!!. How is this acceptable? 9 months DOES NOT = a years no claims! Before you know it there will be 6 month Ultra Rapid Bonus Turbo schemes!#

I find it completely unfair that the majority of us are building up our NCB in the painfully slow manor whilst someone else can come along and build there's up more quickly. I'm actually thinking of cancelling my policy and taking the 9 month one.

The point is, however, that you're paying an increased monthly payment for the honour of an accelerated NCB. This will only be recognised by the same company. Try to switch insurers and you're stuffed.

Oh, this I know, but NU are always the cheapest for me anyway so sticking with them isn't the problem. However, I'm not sure if the 9 month policy is more expensive. I'll have to ask

Remember a few months back I got t-boned? I spent over £2500 of my own money to save my NCB, fixing my car. The other guy claimed, and because technically it was all my fault, my insurance are now voiding my NCB because of this guy's £200 claim against me

    F****** outragous.

Well if you caused the accident Shad, I can't see how you can have expected not to lose your NCB?

Insurance, which i'd want to use if i had a £2500 smash.

My car had much worse damage of my own making, had to claim, and end result lose 2 years NCB and on this years renewal i paid about 60 pounds more with 300 pounds less excess....

If there's a claim aginst your insurance as a result of an accident which was your fault, then you lose your NCB. It's as simple as that. The only way to have avoided it would have been to pay for the repairs to the other driver's car yourself.

I wish I had have done now. I rekon the damage directly relating to the incident would have cost around a grand to repair on its own so that's what I'm going to ask for seeing as I'm losing the NCB anyway.

Reason I didn't claim in the first place was because they would have written it off. I can't have 2 write offs within 3 months.

Sorry but this is not true. Certainly with Admirals 10 month policy, you recieve a full years NCB which is recognisable by all other insurers.

Insurer: 'So, how long have you been driving?'

Insuree: 'Err, just under 10 months now.'

Insurer: 'So, zero no claims bonus then...'

    Insuree: 'No, I've got a year's bonus!'

Insurer: 'OK, so that's zero no claims bonus.'

Some insurers will recognise the NCB from a bonus accelerator policy, others won't. It's at their discretion really. Still, I would imagine that NU wouldn't really have much of a leg to stand on if they tried to claim that they didn't recognise the NCB from an Admiral policy.

I personally went from doing two years of bonus accelerator with Admiral to a full year policy with Elephant....who are part of the Admiral group. Either way, when my insurance comes up for renewal this year I'll have 4 full years and two 10-month years, which is 5+ years NCB any way you look at it. Am I right in thinking that no insurer continues to count NCB over and above 5 years?
