Just had an interesting phone call

Well anyway, it was on ebay a few weeks ago and I spoke to the seller who said he had bought it and repaired it (no new chassis as westfield recommended).

Then I got a call about a week later from someone that said they'd bought it, so I filled them in with the details......

Then I get another call tonite from a different guy that bought the car..... only he didn't even know it had been involved in an accident, let alone written off as a category C car!!!

I kinda feel sorry for the guy, but what more can I do? The car left my ownership back in July.

There is nothing you can do. If the guy didnt get a HPI check done, then thats kinda his own fault.

So the guy that bought it from eBay then sold it to someone but missed out the bit that they knew it'd been in an accident....

Surely he can take it back to the seller and demand his money back as he was mis-sold the car?

nagh you can force the seller to take it back. it was mis-sold and as a result, he is entitled to his money back

Does anyone know of a webpage that explains what the difference is between cat c / cat d etc ? Also, if a repairs been done correctly, then the car should be as safe as before the accident?

afaik.. (and i may be completely wrong)

cat a is when the car chassis has been sevearly damaged and should be crushed

cat b is when there is significant chassis damage, car has to be put thru an mot (or similar) once fixed

cat c is a financial write-off - ins co decided they're better off just binning it than repairing. NO MOT NEEDED AFAIK.

cat d might be for fires, or something similar

Almost 5lab.

Cat C must be inspected by VOSA/DVLA when it has been repaired.

When insuring the car again, you must declare to the ins company it has been written off previously, some may refuse cover.

Sorry if this is OT : Our Cat C crash did have some chassis damage - the chassis arms were bent and part of the repair quote said they were going to bend the arms back in place.

I've seen a Cat D on ebay for a car - but it doesn't appear as though there's been any chassis damage - so surely that should be okay to buy?

it might not even show up on HPI

I once part exhchanged a BMW 3 series which has been painted, but which didn't show on HPI.

I did the deal...part exchanged it in....and then 2 days later HPI deemed to put it on the record!

I enquired as to why, and it was because the Insurance company had'nt reported it ntil then.

(read into this what you will, but it is conceivable that the large insurance company, who paid out a total loss claim on the car, rebuilt it, sold it....got as much dough back for it as possible...and delayed adding it to the recordL )

It was owned by the bloke I got it from for 2 weeks...he got it from an auction. At no point did he EVER see it as a wrote off, because it never showed up on HPI or Equifax's list. He had done both checks. He simply didn't like the car (and it DID drive like a bent banana). He part exchanged it in good faith, and I never involved him. Poor sod. He lost a fortune on the part ex price anyway.

The insurance company were the recorded seller on the auction papers.

It took my garage many weeks of legal fights to get them to pay US back the loss on the trade value.
