What should i do with my car?

    Hi all

I need some advice on what i should do with my car, a 1.4 vauxhall astra merit L reg. I'm coming to the end of my industrial placement and i'll be going back to university at the end of september. Since finishing my placement i could live without my car although it makes going out a bit of a pain since i live more than 6 miles from the nearest bus route Also in the last 3 weeks or so i've spent nearly £300 on my car to keep it running till the end of my placement, things i've had replaced are alternator, front anti roll bars, front part of exhaust and the ignition amplifier or something like that. This morning it sounds like the exhaust needs some more work doing to it, so i'll need to take it to the garage to get it sorted which is more expense.

I can bike to the local bus stop and leave my bike and get changed at my gran's although she doesn't like me doing that because she worries about me biking Also she got me the car to stop me biking. If people do suggest i sell, i can't see anyone wanting to buy it since it's done more than 125K miles, it has rust in places (on a white car doesn't look good) and the drivers seat has a tear in it. If i do keep it, i'll only be using it on uni holidays to get to work and go out occasionally.

Edit: I have a gym membership at york untill the end of September, i'm going to the gym 4 days a week, and i can't get to the gym without my car. I think thats all the information i need to base my decision on.

So should i sell my car or keep it, bearing in mind i probably won't buy another car?

    Thanks

    Andy

You should of asked yourself the sell/fix question before you spent any money on it...
If you've fixed it then you might as well keep it, if the exhaust is blowing then get under it and see what the problem is, bit of exhaust wrap does wonders, as does tightening loose bolts...

If it's not too far from uni you might do well to cycle, etc... It's often inconvenient driving around those areas, finding somewhere to park etc anyway. You could always get a moped?

I won't be taking my car to uni at all, i'll have my bike and my legs for cycling walking respectively the car will stay at home for holidays when i need to get to work. Before i had my car i used to bike to my grans (around 6 miles) then get the bus to work in york - whatever the weather, windy weather is the worst - snow the most um interesting.

MMmmm "1.4 vauxhall astra merit" - best suggestion: burn it

Nah someone will want it - you'd be surprised and you might as well get what you can from it. I sold my second car - a MK1 golf 1.6 - after it had been hit by a 4x4 in the rear (BIG damage) for 100quid to some mug for cash. Horrible car, had hole in passenger floor covered with cardboard.

No - it's about £15 to advertise on autotrader.com. I sold my car within a day of putting it on..!

keep it... unless you have a load more cash for a replacement... you know the car, you own it, sure it'll cost a bit to keep it roadworthy now and then, but it's a cheap car to put right...
