Help cure my addiction...
...after having owned 3 of them, I'm now after another MX-5... what is it about a car getting right under your skin?? Can't decide whether to get a cheap one and strip it out or get a better one and spec it up... anyone else have cravings like this??

Its because deep down you know theyre one of the best cars ever produced.
Throw caution to the wind, go buy one now and enjoy it. An aeroplane engine may fall on your head, you may as well have some fun before that happens ![]() Just promise me if you do get another one to add more power - the chassis can handle so much more ![]() Butuz |

I did, but it was a love/hate relationship... in the right conditions (on my own, good roads etc.) it was fantastic, but since moving from Yorkshire to Wiltshire there's a lack of opportunities for fun. Believe it or not, an MX-5 has more 'fun-to-drive' as the Yanks would say - it's more exploitable (and predictable) and just as plugged in (and 10 times more practical)..
A good MX-5 can be had for less than £2K, but her upstairs might make me sell the CBR to get one ![]() |

Same thing as the MX5 though, just a different budget/class. It's not like I havn't tried/owned/considered all the equivilents, they just don't do it for me.
So...er.... give in to the MX5 I suppose ![]() |

Sorry to bring this one from the dead, but I am realistically looking at buying a cheap car, something thats fun to drive but something that isn't going to be to expenisve to run or be much of a liability.
What sort of MX-5 should I look out for, what age, specs etc and what mileage and price should i be looking at? Cheers Ian |

you should aim to spend less than £2k on a 1990-1994 1.6i, preferably an import, specs are pretty much the same, anything less than 100k miles should be fine (tbh they'll happily do twice that), have a look at mx5ocforum.co.uk

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted, either
It'd be nice to finally own a car that's a bit "special" |

How easy are they to service* on your own.
Any major problems that I should look out for and where does most of the rust accumulate? The most annoying thing is, the best priced cars and best condition all seem to be automatic, should this pose a problem, or is there not much difference (I'm used to a manual btw). Ian Cheers for the link I'm sure I'll waste a fair bit of my time on there ![]() *Fiddle with as I'm looking for something to do in my summer vacation, and messing around with a good car sounds like a good thing to spend it on ![]() |

DO the 1.6s actually have any poke? Ive just discounted them previously as they seem to be a bit on teh weedy side. What are they like on the motorway?

The older 1.6's are alot better than they sound - IIRC they detuned the newer 1.6's to make it actually different to the 1.8's.
I think a 1.8 or a 1.6 you'll love both ![]() MX5 is on my to do list I just cant get over the hairdresseryness ![]() Butuz |
