Why does the X1600's VPU have a higher number?

IIRC, the chip number has nothig to do with the level of tech or anything. Its more an indication of when it was designed in the scheme of things.
R=Radeon V=Value ###=Chip design ID So R520 was designed before RV530 (which is therefore assumedly a simplified, cheaper to produce R520). Whereas RV515 is probably based on a re-engineering of an R4## chip. Probably a marrying of the X300 and X700 or there abouts. |

None: By simplified I mean its a smaller sized chip with lower transister counts due to less technology support, fewer pipelines, simpler memory controller. I.e. anything that makes the die smaller and easier to produce.

someone should get nvidia and ATI in a room and knock their heads together.
i dunno about anyone else, but their naming schemes, model numbers, variants and god only knows what else just had me totally confused. it cant be helping their sales figures or their customer satidfaction when they have to spend hours choocing what card when it should really be a simple choice |

I suppose that their various models are all carefully slotted in to keep up with demand and make the best use of yields. Remember, a lot of mid range cards are actually high end cards that haven't made the full grade. I fully agree with the statement about names though, it would be refreshing to have a complete overhaul of naming systems from one of the companies, with a simple indicator of quality and a solid brand name. "Geforce" and "Radeon" mean absolutely nothing now, as they refer to dozens of cards each. I always chuckle when I ask somebody what graphics card they've got and they say, "erm... well it's a Geforce one..."
