HEXUS.beans :: ATI and AMD deal is on...

    New just in, from Willy.
There is a strong word on the street is the deal with AMD is "on." However the question that we are now trying to answer is to find out what the deal entails, since it might not be a clear total acquisition and there might be another twist to this "rumour"..
    More as we get it.

Odd, considering ATi's ties with Intel.

Interesting. Could be (as some rumours have it) a deal to just share fabs or something.

Not if you look at it from AMD's point of veiw it just sweetens the deal.

... they used to have their own Fab on their campus in Toronto - they then moved to a Fabless buisness model

So maybe they're going to start using AMD fabs as well?

Don't see why - AMD are opening new FABs to get more capacity and at least this might mean ATI has a better supplier than it has enjoyed (endured) recently

I have no idea where the money would come from, but AMD could certainly use some additional income of ATI, since the profits from processor sales won't look good for the 2nd half of the year

Perhaps ATI are trying to jump up another level fabrication wise seeing as
graphics cards seems to be one generation behind cpus when it comes to feature size.

I don't like the sound of this. There are already enough politics involved between Intel and graphics card vendors regarding SLI support on different chipsets. If AMD and ATI link up it would get much worse. I would prefer as much transparency and choice as possible so that is it easy to compare the performance of CPU x vs Graphics Card y. I believe this would reduce competition overall.

This deal would prove to be interesting, one would assume focus on performance with ati cards with amd processors, could be good in terms of performance, but certainly narrows down your choices
