One of the major issues that has come up in recent years is the electronics industry's move to lead free. Some companies have experienced problems converting over, reliability issues* are common place for the 360, with plenty of talk of solder issues. What you have to remember is that no one will give you a 100% guarantee that something won't fail, you've just been very unlucky with your 360's. Although i do blame MS for trying to ignore the failure rates, they should have given a lifetime warranty on the RROD as 3 years is just not long enough imo.

*My own company has had a couple of issues switching over to lead free.

    Re: XBox 360 or Not?

yes i have realized that nothing is 100%. it seems that the more advance a technology is the less reliable they are.

take for example the nokia n95. when that was released it was full of major bugs and issues. i even had to return one due to it and recently i got a N82 and that had issues too.

its a shame that companies dont make quality control there number 1 priority. i dont like how MS deals with the rrod. instead of sending the user a brand enw one all they do is send a refurb every time which is shocking and unaccetable. its a well known problem that stops the 360 for being the best console this generation. its a shame because i realy love the 360 and its games but the reliability of it is not acceptable and much rather have a ps3 thats more reliable(yes its not 100%) then a console that doesnt even last 3months without breaking

I personally have had a lot of reliability issues with PC's but a lack of with my 360, which in contrast to the post above, shows a lot of variation in experience. But eventhough my laptop is completely capable of playing a lot of modern games, I now only play games on my 360.

The PS3 has a very high reliability rate and at the price it currently is these days, it's becoming quite tempting.

    Re: XBox 360 or Not?

I think I'm giving serious thought into buying an XBox 360.

I won't really need to upgade my PC fpr a while as it performs okay.
It's just some games I want to play are not out on PC.

If I removed the DVD drive out of the XBox and put 2x 120mm fans over the GPU and CPU, would you have the fans blowing inwards or outwards?

Why would you want to modify the 360?

The beauty of it is that you get it out of the box, plug it in and play, no setup required. Oh, and by removing the DVD drive you will most certainly void the warranty, and as such if you do have any problems, will be royally stuffed.

Much the same as these Intercooler things which just increase temperatures. If you get a recent 360 then they are a hell of a lot cooler than the older ones (mine sits on top of the SkyHD box and next to a shuttle PC and never gets more than warm, even after 5-6 hours of play.

I have fear of electronic things dying. Really bad.

Most of the sites I have looked at seem to say the overheating problem lies with the GPU's tiny heatsink, which is below the DVD drive.

Yes, but if you mod it then you can kiss you warranty goodbye. Then, when you get the almost inevitable RROD you're gonna need to buy another.

I was torn between the 360 and PS3 too. In the end reliability and noise were the deciding factors for me. The price of the 360 peripherals is also very prohibitive. The wifi and HDDs are extortionate.

What are the specs on the type of drives you can use? I have a couple of old SataI drives (120gb and 160gb) lying around, could I use one of those? Unfortunately the proxy is kinda restrictive here so I can't go checking game/console related sites.

nm, found this old thread which kinda answers my question : Upgrading the PS3 HDD

Seems to require a 2.5" sataI 5400rpm hdd

OK - they are not the most reliable - but this elite is about 9 months old now and hasnt really missed a beat. All the games are good, the graphics are very good @ 1080p, its an easy switch on and switch off, you can download films demos and whatnot with no nonsense - all my PC does now is type.

I'd never go back to upgrading graphics card and mobos every 6 months - I'd rather spend the £hundreds per year (for some on here, £thousands) on 360 games and not ever need to pick up a screwdriver.

    One convert here!!!

I also echo this, but then I realised this in about 1998.

PCs are great and I couldn't live without one, but a 360, a modem and an Xbox Live subby is just the best way to game.

    End of story.

Nobody can tell you to 'go and get an xbox 360' it's a personal decision really.

Either you want one because of the games that are available, or the live system or even both.

Each to their own though. Loads of people love the simplicity of console gaming, and there are some great games for them, my nephews have a PC but play 95% of their games on their various consoles.

Personally, I love playing games like CoD4, Quake Wars, Counter strike, and there is no way I would consider playing them on anything other than a PC, aside to that having IRC, Venrtilo, Fraps (etc etc) running at the same time with a second screen just makes it all the more preferable for me.

There is no end of story, cos each person has their own preferences, likes & dislikes.
