'Blows Away the Competition' say CNN.

'Isn't Even Out Yet' says everyone else.

Man, they better not arse this up. I've been waiting so long for this game, and will be buying a new GPU for it, and if, after all that time and money, its anything less than Ninja-Pirate-L33t, I'll... I'll... I'll write an irate letter to my local MP!

'Nothing will ever be the same' say Game Informer.

'Unless its not very good when it finally comes out' say everyone else.

I thought it was 12 year old kids who said "OMFG Diz is teh bestestest gamez evor!!11!' before it was even out?

I remember waiting 9000 years for Tiberian Sun from Westwood, after playing Command and Conquer and Red Alert. That was supposed to be 'teh bestestist gamez ev0r!1!' and when it finally came out... it was quite good. If that.

Maybe it was a good game, but the wait killed it. It was hyped beyond belief, and couldn't ever be as good as it needed to be, by the time it was actually out.

Alas, uness Half Life II is something very special, I can see the same thing happening again.

Still, Doom III, Half Life II, Rome: Total War. Plenty for my X800XT to cut its teeth on.

    Now to save the pennies.

OK it was a mistake for them to put that CNN quote as it's clearly taken from another sentence ie "Half-Life 2 could well be the game that blows away the competition" etc.

It just worsens the already appalling delay shenanigans.

Valve should never have publically outlined a release date until there were copies of the game printed and in Vivendi's hands.

Edit: Still, regardless of what Valve have done since, the best game ever is, and always will be, the original Half-Life. Anybody who disagrees can DIE IN THE FACE!

    I disagree.

Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES), Final Fantasy VII (Playstation), Super Mario Kart (SNES), Goldeneye (N64), Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), Advance Wars (GBA), Metroid Prime (GameCube), Command and Conque (PC), etc, etc, etc.

Just as a matter of interest, how do you "die in the face" ? Is this in any way related to a Resident Evil type virus where the rest of your body continues about it's daily tasks whilst your face slowly rots ? Or am I out of touch with "yoof speak"

You die, via a blow to the face.

If you want to do it onResident Evil, play until you get the Shotgun, let a Zombie walk right up to you, and then aim upwards, and take his head off in one clean blow, whilst shouting 'Die in the face!'.

As for youth speak, its all shizzle to me, my nizzle.

I'm seriously considering another attempt at finding my mapping skills - and remaking some of the best levels from the original half life on the new engine.

Unless of course such a project already exists/is planned.

i'm pretty sure they would still have the source worldcraft files for the orignal halflife levels somewhere, so they could just load them into the new worldcraft (or hammer or whatever it is), lob in some new textures and it'd work fine

What about the scripting, navigation nodes etc?

I'm sure they're pretty different, given a whole new AI.
