    Doom3 at the BBFC

Apparently it was classified on the 16th June.

Meaning the game was basically finished by them.

For my media I made a DVD cover for the conversion of the TV series Band of Brothers into a computer game and I filled in one of the BBFC ratings forms as research. Apparently if a game/film/anything has any reason to have an 18 certificate it must be submitted in full and complete form to the BBFC to be completely looked over and rated accordingly.

    Paul Adams's system
Do they have to complete the entire game on the hardest setting to verify if anything actually needs cutting or toning down?

Not quite the same as classifying a film, I guess - and what if there are multiple paths to complete the game, or tons of easter eggs that might change the rating?

i think that doom3 isn't going to be an 18 rated game because of gore alone (which i must say isn'tvery extreme if that e3 leak is anything to go by) but for its use of black magic and references to the devil etc.

i remember a game on the gamecube that was not a violent game at all but was and 18 because of its references to black magic and sourcery etc.

Not 100% sure how it works exactly but IIRC its does have to be played through / storyline or content submitted to the BBFC.

Several ways to do this -

Send someone to play through it with a BBFC regulator. You could say that this person could play through the game in a specific way to "hide" particularly bad parts but if that comes out later and the publisher gets in bother its clearly not in their best interest. If the BBFC has words in retailers ears not to sell a companys software due to infringements the retailers have bound to take heed for fear of bad press / losing official channels.

Submit documents detailing the themes/content of the software. Again this is open to abuse but it really is in the publishers interest to ensure the info is truthful and accurate. ID and Activision know very well what the target audience for Doom IIIs content is and that what rating the game would probably receive. They just have to be careful it doesn't overstep the boundaries.
