In my opinion it still is THE best space sim.

Have you played the first one? Following on from the storyline is great fun.

this was the game that made me spend £50 on a force feedback joystick - only to disable it because it made it real hard to aim while getting hit!

escape fails - in it for the women and money check out the demo, we rock

It is still the definative space sim.

Nothing else has the sheer scale of the ships that Freespace had. The Lucifer in the first game looked awesome and then in the second one they go and make some mofo of a thing, and sends scores of them!

The nebula effects were spot on and worked perfectly for the gameplay and feel of the game. Seeing those MASSIVE ships just slowly appearing through the clouds before you was an awesome sight.

... wish a third one was on it's way.

    Ya. Great game.

And nicely fits my new, 'Play Games Delayed' philosophy.

With new developments coming out all the time, we all know how hard it is to stay up to scratch - and how expensive! Then you hear about some amazing new game, which to get the most out of, you need to have the afformentioned cutting edge machine.

However, what's also true, the more new stuff that gets developed, the more quickly prices drop on 'older' stuff. Therefore, if one has the patience, you can wait until the prices drop and get the hardcore machines with the latest and greatest games - SECOND TIME AROUND!

Upgrade your machine when it's cheap. Buy the games when they're cheaper, and when they've been proven as either classics or crapics. What's more, if you get on the right part of the upgrade curve, when you buy those 'new' games, later down the line, you can play them the way they were intended, everything cranked up.

The only downside is that it's not 'right now'.

More or less my sentiments exactly galant. Top man, he knows what he's talking about . Although I did get doom 3 at the same time as FS2, ive spent about an hour playing d3 and 15 hours on FS2.

    I-WAR, THEY-WAR, WE ALL-WAR.... language lesson over

What's more you don't feel so bad if you never get the time to play a game that cost less than a tenner. Also you're not waiting around for driver updates or game patches to fix problems and lets not forget that the mod community has been hard at work so there is lots more to do when you finish the original game. Also if you get stuck someone will have written a guide or a walkthrough. Personally I love the GOTY (game of the year) editions... Morrowind & Operation Flashpoint are good examples and my most recent purchase Fallout ultimate collection.

Play the games that are worth playing after the hype and on hardware that exceeds the recommended specification by a good margin but be carefull some of the older titles will run on your swanky new OS.

I played the original I-War ages ago but I can barely remember it. As far as I can remember each stage is is made up of the same vast piece of space in different places. Freespace 2 is more like level based. I've never played I-War 2. Can you recommend it as being better than the original?

    I wish they made another.

I love both FS1 and FS2 - they are only beaten as my fav game by Half-Life. In their genre, they are by far the best.

    1. 99 as a heck of a bargain, the boxed version goes to 30 or 40 quid on eBay and Amazon, and all English versions of the game are sold out. Even the sold out brand repack. This says a lot for the game.
I should add that a sneaky person can get the game really cheap in German and then use the serial of this for online play. Online disk backup image is necessary. It is abandonware.

We should start a petition to get freespace 3 made...

I'd gladly NOT buy Doom III, HL2 AND Stalker just to be able to have that game.

edit: Hang on, I'm finding news about freespace 3 and the rights being purchased by Derek Smart.
