The Big PS3 Pork Pie - Naughty Sony!

The chip is not due to be available to anyone until September. Which means the stunning visuals shown at E3 could not have been created on one, casting doubt on the validity of Sony claims that the visuals were real PS3 in-game footage.

Burkett has commented that the visuals had been created on current nVidia hardware of roughly the same power as the RSX. That still casts some doubts on the PS3's barn-storming E3 presence, and particularly whether much of the footage (as it appeared to be) was done, at best, using the game engine to create cut-scenes, or whether it was really realtime, in-game footage.
Naughty! naughty! Console wars getting dirty?

The XBox demos at E3 were running on Apple G5s. This kind of thing isn't unusual.

Yeah, but there's nothing controversial about that because those G5's are only 30% of the power of the final Xbox 360 (according to MS anyway), meaning that all the Xbox 360 demos shown are actually of a lower quality than is possible.

Why on earth was it an apple G5? Strange that MS of all people would use a apple, their rival.

EDIT : Just read somewhere that the E3 demo's where done using 2 Geforce 6800GT's in SLI. The RSX might me even faster.

It's not really to do with software though, it's simply to do with processing power. Microsoft don't make processors

also the processor is made by ibm anyway, and is not identical to the g5, just based upon it.

Heh, you sound like some sort of secret Console Police Officer..

@dom- Do we know how the systems they displayed at E3 will differ from the real article?

Probably not much to be fair. But some naive people seem to forget that E3 is all about corporate hype, marketing and making things look better than they are for commercial purposes. Sony should be more transparent and honest about there technology. Thats not to say the new consoles are going to rock

Oh yawn. All this power for your next Halo X or MGS ? Wonderful.

Whats the point of all this power when manufacturers apart from Nintendo will constantly release the same old formulae games with just flashy graphics?

Most importantly, when will the consumer get bored of the same old rehashed formulaes, forcing the industry to take some risks?

The graphics part is usually one of the last to be manufactured, and with the console not due for another year, it's rather obvious that any demos aren't going to be running on final hardware.

It's the same with every console, pretty much ever.

Both the 360 and the PS3 were running on hardware that approximates the abilities of the final products, in the case of the 360, they were running on G5 based machines as they are comparable to the design of the 360 core, and in the case of the ps3, the machines were running on cell processors, but with the graphics coming from a nextgen nvidia graohics part that shared capabilities with the RSX.

After all, if they were running on final hardware, they'd be hitting retail a lot sooner than they are.

AFAIK EVERY game is a re-hash, 'new' games are normally only so because they employ 'new' technology (touchscreen anyone?). If a game is good and is a variation on a previously produced formula then fair enough.

Every game is a re-hash? That sounds a bit harsh.
    DC's Seaman was a re-hash of ...?
    GC's Super Monkey Ball ...?
    ...

Yeah, Ragdoll Kung Fu isn't a re-hash of anything I can think of.

Also, has anyone seen the GDC vids for Spore? Can't WAIT for that!

Sorry, off topic a bit there.

Anyway, the comment about flashy graphics is true, but more powerful machines don't just mean flashy gfx. They also mean better implementations of things like physics and customisable content, making the games far more immersive and engaging.

Sony never claimed it was in game footage they said it was a mock up of what in game would look like. Most of the XBox360 stuff was also pre-rendered only EA had actually gameplay.
