Colin Mcrae Rally 3 and 2005 - Sound Problems

I've been playing Colin Mcrae Rally 3 - the sounds always been dodgy on my laptop, (it works but the car engine sound in practically either on/full revs or off), and now I've got 2005 on my main PC (SB Live) and the sound works fine but craps out after being in the game after about 20seconds... it just completely fizzes / crackles... any ideas?

    Ta - Josh

ps - sound is fine in other games / window apps etc

I installed the patch and that seems to have made it slightly better on 05 - but it still sometimes happens - man the games difficult ! (compared to 3, 2 and 1)

The only thing I've noticed is that sometime the sound of the car engine will vanish but I'm pretty sure this is down the system I play it on. I use a wheel and manual gear shifts and while more difficult than the say 1-3 it's about the same as 4. Still no problem for a driver of my talents.
