Counter Strike SOurce / Steam - Playing Offline

Ok, i thought it was a bit bad letting someone else use my pc, but whilst he has become an avid fan of computer games whilst using my pc,my room-mate (at uni) has prevented me from playing counterstrike source in the near future.

I created my own server and played against bots (on cs source) but when i came back today, the lad must have clicked the wrong button, and because we are connected via LAN (to the internet) and that the uni network is shockingly strick steam cannot connect.

Ok so i was playing it hunky dory offline, until my friend must have clicked play online or something, it was then unable to find the connection (to the net - due to blocked ports) and thus everytime i start up hl2, cs source and steam, it just comes up that offline mode has been disabled because there is no stored password.

How can i now play offline, i.e. so my password is stored, (can i somehow change something) as i have absolutely no access to the internet via any normal way (adsl etc) in any time soon!

Please help me, everything would be greatfully appreciated

    Ian

You are quite likely stuffed like me when it comes to steam, uni blocks all the needed ports for me, and port tunneling would be rather likely to get your thrown out

Best off finding CS 1.5 from somewhere and playing that on the LAN (its what we do here)

yeh i have got 1.6 off someone so will be trying to play that

this is a damn shame that i cant play the new one no more, and it looks like i wont be able to play it for some time yet, as im not taking the pc home (so it can access the net) some time soon

but lets see how 1.6 goes

Take a look on the steam forums/FAQ. They do answer questions like this, albeit with a 'the simplest thing is just to go online quickly ' or ' take your computer somewhere with an online connection'. I think there was an answer for how to activate an account on someone elses computer, then transfer it over to a new one, but I think you basically have to transfer the entire steam directory and game installation over, if it's possible at all.

Nope your screwed basically, another reason why the whole steam thing is flawed

But tbh if you have a Half Life CD, you can get this:

    http://www.counter-strike.net/mod_full.html

This is what you need, the last 'Proper' version of counterstrike before it was fubared with with 1.6

Then if you want bots, search google for either Realbot, or Podbot (those were the days lol), they should have 1.5 compatable versions still and were pretty good in their day. Don't bother with 1.6, its poop.

Macbook, 1.8ghz Core Duo, 2GB Ram, Superdrive

mnet, just realised you are at kent uni, what ya studying?

I managed to http tunnel for source last year. Once you've authenticated be sure to set offline mode and you shouldnt have to connect again.

I'll try and find the process for it...

If you can't get permission for hardlined broadband what about mobile broadband? Although you may well need to check that the ports you want aren't blocked before you sign up!

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

If you have a friend who can get online then do this.......

Install Steam, log into your account, do all the updates, exit from Steam, make the copy of the Clientregistry.blob file, start up and let it fall back into offline mode, make sure it all works, then exit again.

Then burn a CD of the install and take the CD to the remote computer and copy the install there

    Haha, nice new thread.

An easier way of getting steam to allow offline mode again: Disconnect all access to the internet (turn off wireless card, unplug lan cable etc) and start steam up again and it will ask to go in offline mode. Works everytime for me
