Smile Just picked up a PS3

Whilst out in Japan on business, thought I'd have a quick wander around the fantastic shops. My resistance to buying one caved in and I finally picked one up yesterday.

Feck me it's heavy, but looks very nice. Of course it's the Jap version, and so the only potential problem I can see is the NTSC, but I have the component cable and will be connecting up via HDMI so that should be fine.

Only other thing, I spoke to someone who said it has a proper auto-sensing switched mode power supply, but the instructions (or what I can make out with my very limited katakana :O) mention 100V only. But after some reading on the net, the PSUs are proper switched mode jobbies which autorange

Still, an absolute bargain, bought Ridge Racer 7 and Sonic (for swmbo) and a second wireless controller for that 2 player split screen fun for half the UK official launch price (and a hell of a lot cheaper than the current imports you can buy in the UK).

I guess if I don't get on with it, I can always stick it on ebay and probably more than get my cash back.

Had a quick play and it looks very good. I don't have an xbox 360, but have seen how slick gear of war looks. Ridge Racer 7 is silky smooth, but at the moment it looks awful because I'm stuck with my hotel room 480i telly. Can't wait to get home and try it on my 1080P projector

The biggest advantage for me compared to seeing an xbox 360 in action is it's very quiet, and I don't have to be put off by that jet engine whirring constantly in the background

Anyone else got one apart from depresion ?

The 60Gig version is 60,000 Yen, the 20Gig is 50,000

I bought the 60 gig which equates to about £280, added a second wireless controller (4500Yen) and a component lead (2700Yen) and then the games were about 5500-6000Yen each.

Not bad value for money if you ask me

edit: in fact, just looked at the current exchange rate, and it's more like £260

    Nice pickup, top bargain. Enjoy

1080p projector ? Oh lordy Which one if you don't mind me being nosy ?

I'll be having a PS3 myself when it eventually arrives on these shores. Hopefully Amazon will do the same ordering system as they did with the Wii.

Will this remain a fanboy free thread ? Will people play nice ? Stay tuned...

Hehe. It's the rather sexy VPL-VW50 SXRD jobby.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy - but I didn't just say that!

why not your cup of tea out of interest?

mike, should do. Either I casually sneak it in, or I declare it and pay the VAT which will be 17.5% of the cost of the unit, i.e. an additional £45 or so. Even if I do declare it, it's still cheaper than getting one now and even when they are about in the UK...

Ah right, I thought it would be a lot more expensive than that What was the total price of it if you don't mind me asking?

Could you please update this thread with a proper verdict when you get it home? I'm interested to read if the hype is actually just that - or if it really is as good as some of the reviews suggest.

    Thank you

OK, breakdown so far is with GBP pricing using 225 yen to the pound
    Code:
                                Jap Yen GBP
    PS3 60GB version 59980 267
    Component cable 2700 12
    2nd wireless controller 4500 20

    Ridge Racer 7 6270 28
    Sonic 6480 29
The component cable connects to the multiAV connector on the back of the PS3. This connector is the same as that on the PS2 so you can re-use any PS2 video output cable on the PS3

yeah its an abysmal game, my little boy wanted it for christmas and a 6 year old doesnt care if its a good game or not when his fave character is in it. Only problem is he asks me to do the bits he cant and its like rubbing sand paper in my eyes being forced to play it

    Feel free to add me
