    Burning Crusade packaging

Now, I'm no tree-hugging hippy, but when a company uses a box for the hell of it, well it's a waste and all that.

Take the Burning Crusade box. Right, they have used a DVD-style box. Good. But then a) the DVD box is inside a cardboard box (they're not the only company to have used this!), b) this box had bloody gatefold 'bits' and c) three of the disks are on the DVD splindle, but one them is in it's own card 'sleeve'.

    WTF?

does it come with a big manual or anything similar? or is it really just a waste that a dvd box could cope with?

btw: a tree huger in denial is still a tree hugger

It could be put into just a DVD case as everything is included in the DVD case... the box is just extra 'eye candy'

The reason they did the extra sleeve for the 4th CD is becuase of the space required for manual etc you can't make the spindle big enough to hold all 4 CD's

The only real 'waste' is the cardboard cover with all the fold out stuff... but alteast it looks good next to the similar styled WoW box

there is a manual, but I haven't read it, but then there probably isn't much that I don't already know! It's only a few pages.

Bit of Lore in the manual (outland & new races) as-well as installation and activation information plus lots of pages of T&C and notes pages.

to be honest I bet the paper comes from a sustainable forest for the packaging.

Anyway, ignore the tree issue, what you should worry about is the chemicals used to make your lovely motherboard and graphics cards

/me dons flame-proof ( CFC free and WEEE compliant ) suit and runs

They're making enough money they can afford to waste some on packaging

I was wondering why they didn't just release it on a single DVD... Also why not just let people buy a key and download the updates from them?

The CE is on dvd as well as CD's a I believe. Knowing Blizzard it's prolly slightly cheaper to put it on CD, and that's the same reason why you can't download it at the moment I'm guessing. They would not be able to cope with that amount of download in such a short time, without having to spend some serious money.
