    So bored that i'm actually going to try WOW

    Bit of a games gap atm - I even spent last weekend replaying far cry and some various mods for it.. So.. I thought I might give this here WOW a go - apparently it's quite popular

    My initial experience wasn't hot - i couldn't download the 'blizzard downloader' from the european site without first registering (annoying as I don't intend to play it till thur night/friday) so I had to create a false account to get to the link to download the downloader..

    And now to the downloader itself.. What a pain in the royal that's turned out to be - just how many ports do i have to open? One would of been fine but no, I had two ports and then an entire range to do thenafter (a first for me in the draytek 2800VG I have). Then it complained about not being able to talk to the tracker. Then it complained about me being behind a firewall (amusing since i've opened the ports it wanted). So after about an hour or so of messing around and getting irritated with their graphics heavy site (not fun over remote desktop to my server at home) i'm still "appearing to be behind a firewall" but the tracker works now and it's downloading. Finally.

    I understand the idea of using P2P downloading clients but why on earth not just hand me utorrent and a .torrent file - only one port required and far less faff!

    So, anyway I'm going to try it for 10 days (although for me that works out less - i don't game during the week period) and see if i get hooked. I haven't bothered to see how much they'll fleece me per month thenafter.. This would be my first experience of a MMORPG (or any persistant world game online). I feel such a newb.. Will I get hooked? Is the game easier to use than the stupid downloader ?

    1st the Blizzard downloader is AWFUL!

    Penny Arcades Opinion

    You can download the WoW client from fileplanet aswell as all the patches but can be annoying if your not a subscriber (I am, so not sure on download speeds for non)

    The whole hooked thing, depends You may find it confusing at first, some times when you ask n00b questions you get friendly and helpful answers, other times you get 'N00B!!!! YOUR A N00b!!!!'

    If you know of other people on servers I would recommend joining them (welcome to come onto Outland and I'll help you out) or the other option is try and join a low population server where there will be more lower level characters that will be around to help

    I must admit the prospect of millions of 11 year olds kicking my arse has generally put me off online gaming

    I do have a m8 on it already (and thanks for the offer) so i'll see how it goes methinks..

    The advantage of no ingame voice comm's and a /ignore command makes it alot easier to survive the kiddies

    Plus you have the choice as to whether you want to get ganked by horde characters by going on a pvp or pve server

    Man i'm completely out of touch with da lingo - pvp/pve?

    I haven't decided on a char type yet but i'd probably go for a mage based on what my m8's told me (and the fact that it's my fave class in offline RPGs).

    As long as I get to kill stuff (lots) i'm usually satisfied. I'm a man with simple needs (or so the wife says).

    PVE = player versus environment
    PVP = Player versus Player!

    On a PVE server you can go anywhere without the worry that you will be attacked by the opposing faction (Alliance / Horde) but you loose that side of it (annoying at times but adds alot to the game)

    On a PVP server soon as you leave the 'noob' zones you are tagged for PVP and can get 'ganked' (people jumping you and killing you while low health, fighting something else, much higher level than you) but you get much more of a feel for the areas as some are more dangerous than others.

    Find out what faction your friend plays and join him

    Oh but i'd want to kill my friend, repeatedly and without remorse Can u still do that if your on the same side?
    Still, he's been playing for over a year so i've probably got to play for at least a week to get to his level lol

    If you dont go onto the same faction you wont be able to talk / trade / group in game but you can kill each other

    But you can duel with people the same side to see who can kill each other 1st

    Ever get the feeling the world is against you? That sticks just fly out of no-where and trip you up. Street lamps going out when you get here hoping you fall off the curb...

    Welcome to PVE!
