    Wii makes whistling noise?

    Has anybody experienced this?
Finally got a Wii yesterday and it's great.. but..
Trying to play Zelda and it makes a constant high-pitched whistling noise (can only assume it's the disc drive making it)? It's loud and annoying enough to stop me from playing Zelda (and thus have only spent about 10minutes tops in the game).
Some light shaking of the console seems to stop it, but only for a couple of seconds then it'll kick up again.

No noise when there isn't a disc in, when Wii Play or Wii Sports are inserted it makes a brief (1/2second) whistle of the same pitch, but then stops (and doesn't reoccur during game play).

Is it likely to be the disc, or the Wii itself? Gah I am unlucky enough to get a dodgy Wii won't be able to get it replaced until Game have plenty of stock I bet.

I've never heard of a disc doing that too a slot drive (but i guess its possible, the way the cd drive regulates speed n all).

However you might find its just the drive when its reading a certain part (which you happen to be using in zelda).

Play n Sports are really simple and i'd assume won't be using anything like as much of the disc.

So i'd guess from what you've said its the Wii.

Contact nintendo directly, i belive they have a stock for people like you!

Hmm strange.. it seems to have stopped.. turned the Wii on its side, turned it on.. no whistling, put it upright and it still didn't make the noise. Bet it will probably come back though.. in which case I guess I will have to ring Nintendo on their good ol' National rate ( :/ ) number.

Is it free pickup/exchange? Or do you have to pay for shipping back to them.. then await the delivery of a new one?

I would suggest talking to Nintendo about this, they probably will replace it if it is the console that is faulty.

Well I've called Nintendo... the recording just says to post broken Wii's to some address with a covering letter. Don't think I want to bother packaging it all up and paying for postage, without so much as a reference number - god knows when/if I'd get it back.

Also called up Game, the guy seemed baffled and asked about 5 times "whistling noise?" and went silent for long periods. Basically alls I could get out of him was they would refund it /if/ (he was very insistent about saying /if/) they found a problem - I don't think he believed me.

Sigh. Don't really know what to do.. waited ages to get a Wii, don't want to be without it for weeks.. not sure what my options are really. Might call Nintendo again later and try to actually speak to a human being, see what they say (though I suspect it'll just be 'post it to us').

So basically I have to mither for weeks, then they might send a replacement Wii for me?

I might get the missus to ring after work, and see what a human being says on Nintendos (..0870..) tech line.. (she's better at complaining than me ).

    Its so frustrating.

Good luck getting through to someone on that line, it took me 2 weeks to get passed the constant engaged tone.

Did you not wait then? Its not always the time quoted often shorter.

I had to leave, didn't have time to wait.
Tried when I got home.. eventually got through and it said 1hour 15minutes... so put the phone down.

After ringing several GAME stores in the area one of them agreed to take my name/number and said they would call as soon as they got some in and put one aside, so I can come in and swap my Wii for a new one. (who knows how long it'll take though for them to get more in that individual shop, and if they'll even call/put one aside ).

Ah well, at least I have it at the moment.. it doesn't make whistling noises when playing GC games so entertaining myself with extreme G etc.

    :/
