What exactly happens when you overclock?

Well...nothing really. Should you see an instant effect (of the OC) in first part of this screen (your example):

..if so; nothing appears to be changed when I OC.

    Nope.

Have you actually tried booting to windows after you changed the settings?

    of course

I really can't see whats the issue here. Maybe I should update my BIOS to the newest version and try again.

The settings look fine to me.

Which BIOS are you on at the moment?

I've updated the BIOS now and it seems that the OC is working. I actually updated the BIOS but downgraded it to 0614 as I read at www.xtremesystems.org that it was the best OC BIOS version. ..Shame on me!!

So, ok. Its working now but why now? Why did't it work with v.0614?

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

It may have been the best version for whatever they were doing, but, trust me, I tested them all when I was writing this, and on the P5B, it was always best to have the later BIOSes.

It could also be to do with some of the other hardware that you have, that doesnt play nice with that particular BIOS.

Swings and roundabouts, glad you sorted it

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

Hi, I'm using an e4300 on an Asus P5NSLI with a Thermaltake BigTyp 120 cooler. I'm pretty sure I followed your guuide step by step, and have managed to get some results, but they were very poor.

I actually got stuck on the "OC for beginners" part of the guide. My problem is that I can't get an FSB frequency higher than 275MHz, if I try 300 or higher, upon reboot at first my screen doesn't even turn on, then it reboots again, and on the POST I get the message "MBO is now in safe mode, please re-setting CPU or RAM frequency in CMOS setup" (XD motherboard english roxx ).
I've tried upping Vcore and RAM voltages but with no success, it's always the same thing. Here are some pics of my bios setup at the settings that manage to boot:

Oh yeah, and of course at the 9×275MHz frequency, my system is perfectly stable
