Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Idiot Question:
How do i set my ram at 1:1 because in CPU-Z it reads 11:16, i have an E6600 overclocked to 3.25GHZ with temp around 50? Also my Mobo is an EVGA 680i, and my memory is Corsair PC2-8500 1066mhz 2x1GB Dominator |

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Clunk, thanks for the guide. Yesterday I recieved delivery of a brand, spanking, shiny new Q6600 (G0) and Asus PK5-E mobo and today decided to search for a newbie's overclocking guide. Voila!, a step-by-step walkthrough with pics. Brilliant. But...
I'm having problems getting past the initial stages, namely changing the DRAM frequency and FSB. I'm quite prepared to accept blame -- I am, after all, an overclocking virgin. To make matters a little bit more confusing I'm using the 0503 bios (necessary for the latest chips, I believe) and the bios screens are different from the ones posted in the tutorial. Here's some caps to illustrate. EDIT: OK, I can't post any caps until I've made a few more posts. Drat. OK, well, in the meantime, let me explain as best as I can with mere words... I was able to change the memory timings as shown at the beginning of the guide. The problem begins after that when you talk about changing the DRAM frequency. Even thought my FSB shows as 266, I can only change my DRAM freq to 667, 800, 889 or 1067. I notice too that the FSB setting will not budge (despite the bios information on the right saying it can be changed from anywhere 200 to 800 or thereabouts). No matter if I press Enter or left/right, it won't budge. I get the feeling this is due to the fact I haven't been able to make good with the DRAM bit. But that's just a guess. Any clues? Shame I can't post the pictures to show how the different bios screens -- a lot of functions appear to have moved places, been renamed, etc. Anyway, thanks for your time in advance. |

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
This guide was written for the P5B series of boards which used the 965 chipset, your board is the P5K series which uses the P35 chipset.
Click the P5K addon guide in my sig. This first part of the guide is worth a read before you read the P5K add on, just for general info, all the question you have just asked, are answered in the guides ![]() The memory frequency (when set to 1:1) will always show double the FSB, so and FSB of 266 will show a DRAM frequency of 533, and 300FSB will show DRAM frequency of 600 and so on. To enter the FSB frequency, just highlight it and then type in a number, then press enter - simple as that. |

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
I'm about to stick in an Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.0 GHz in my rig using an Asus P5N-E nForce 650i SLI Chipset LGA775 motherboard, a Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooling Fan, and two extra case fans from my case's built in ones. Also going to be running 2 GBs of RAM, and have an 800w power supply. How much can I expect to overclock my processor (safely). It doesn't *have* to be a major boost; I'd just like to get a much power out of my chip as I (safely!) can.

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Thanks, Supershanks!
I'll be sure to use this when my new rig is complete. Anyone have any tips? I'm new to this, and would hate to burn out my new shiny processor on the first go. ![]() Also, has anyone else OC'ed this processor with this or a similar motherboard? I'd liek to know ahead of times what kinds of speeds I can expect to see, just out of curiosity to see if the project would be worth the effort (and risk!). lol ![]() |

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Many thanks, Clunk! Your P5K was perfect for my needs -- I've now got the litter sucker clocked at 3Ghz. No doubt, I'll come back here asking more stupid questions when I decide to go for more but in the meantime, many thanks. You're a scholar and a gentleman.

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Thanks Clunk Great guide for beginers and struggling amateurs like myself, the timing guide was especially usefull. Ive now got my Q6600 b3 stepping @ 3.5GHz

How are you hitting that speed/temp? My hardware is in my sig! I'm using a 6420 with Arctic Freezer 7 Pro. I set RAM 1:1 and upped FSB to 360x8 @ 1.35. This got me to 2.9Ghz without anything else. All other ram settings are on auto and voltages are untouched and running auto (I think). If I push to 372 it'll boot and crash. 380 won't boot at all. So I decided to read up on it abit more. I manually set my RAM to 2.1v (it's OCZ Platinum PC2-6400Rev 2), this is what is recommended for this RAM (I can't post a link but under the reviews on newegg on page 2 or 3 it's the first post.) I increased vCore to 1.42v and FSB to 380MHz. Though I only ran Orthos for 1+1/2 hours (I know I need to fully test) but it appears to be stable enough. Uguru records temps as 27 idle and 44 maxed. Core Temp is 33 and 51 maxed. Which tool did you use? As I'm new to this do you have any advice on getting this baby to 3.2 or more? Cheers, Method |

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners
Clunk never mentioned the importance of a good case (well I haven't spotted it)...my small contribution is as follows:-
E4300@3ghz+AF7 cooler + P180 case fans on min+ using OCCT=temps of 63c E4300@ leisurely jaunt of 2.37ghz + stock cooler + crappy cheap case + using OCCT=65c The stock cooler should be OK for overclocking the E4300 to 2.37 so it just leaves the case. |

2nd computer gigabyte 81865GME, Igig PC3200, E4300@2.37ghz stock cooler, FSP 400w PSU, 19" Mitsubishi DP92 with 128 ragepro.
