C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

this thread is rather long and its making me sweat..

im about to upgrade my pc and build a m8, both having quad more.

can i ask whats reccomended motherboard wise at the moment and also a decent PSU to go with it ? some overclocking will be done to both, got to get at least 3ghz out a 2.4 quad init

and can anyone get the corsair dominator DDR2 1066 speed ram, seems to be pre order everwere (for under a hundred tho)

Gonz just get the 6400 ram and run 400*8 (will give you a 3.2ghz quad).

Temps seem to hit a maximum of around 56, idle they're about 35ish. This is using a Scythe Mine (which may be orientated the wrong way round.. fan [==] instead of [||] and a couple of 120mm's with fairly bad cabling in the way. I've got a blowhole which i'm reluctant to use because it's fairly noisy.

Hello,
I was directed to this guide from toms hardware with the understanding it is the best of its kind and I agree. It is the most clear over clocking guide I have read.

After reading to page 30 ( I will continue tomorrow) two questions arise.


I understand that increasing the Front Side Bus is in effect over clocking everything connected to that bus including the audio, video, hard drives and USB expansion cards. I saw no mention of limiting the PCI bus or how to do so. Would you recommend doing this?



Newer boards support 1033 1300 and 1066 Front Side bus. Would you advise lowering the multiplier and increasing the FSB to realize the potential of the board. This may a be more technical way of over clocking and if so please disregard it as this thread is geared toward novices (of which I am currently).

I use one computer for a multitude of task and I prefer a stable system with a mild over clocking taking advantage of the performance increase available while retaining the stability of a stock processor.

Hey I'd just like to add (again) that this is the most bulletproof yet easy to follow overclocking guide i have found on the internet.
JUst by familiarising myself with the basic steps (and more importantly the sequence) I have been able to overclock all of my core2 cpu's and i even o/c my BRAND new e8400 right out of the box (from stock 3.0 straight to 4.1) without a single glitch. My poor punished cpu never even got a chance to run at her stock speed. As soon as she was born she was already having around 35% extra flogged out of her 6mb L2 body.

A hypothetical example (well, might actually be quite real soon):

E2xxx with 10x mulitplier and an FSB of 300Mhz.

Does DDR2-800 actually make sense if a I run it at a 1:1 ratio? Wouldn't be DDR2-677 be equally appropriate with even lower latency ratings?

Hi guys !
Thanks to the gorgeous guide - got me to do my first time OC'ing (except some try with 286 decades ago ).
My specs should be attached, so I'll go straight to point > 2.4 to 2.9 went OK (fsb 266 - 320), no probs, temps low (had to adjust vcore volts, on auto it gave just too much and went overheating).
Tried another round, this time with FSB base, so fsb further from 320 to 400 (and adjusted memory ratio backwards of course, and increased vcore a bit, too)
Well, started up, was running, but the data shown in both BIOS and OS were just CRAZY ... can't understand what that means, anyone having an idea what that could be ?

EDIT: As I didn't get any advice yet, I've managed to keep playing with lower settings in the meantime. Upgraded RAM to 4GB (2x2GB). Now it's running at FSB 320, so from 2.4 Ghz to 2.88 Ghz, v-core 1.3V, ram 4-4-4-12 on 2.1V, all stable with temps 44-idle, 54 under have load.
Question is - should I try pushing more up, since I'm having this trouble as described above with FSB 400, and lower settings will get my RAM on lower frq ?

Hey Im new on this forum. Btw its great. I have an E6600 @ stock 2.4Ghz and I am trying to o/c it to atlleast 3Ghz. I followed your guide but I cannot put the FSB : DRAM to the desired 1:1 as it just doest have that option in my BIOS American Megatrends Inc. Version p1.10 in CPU-Z it tells me that its at 4:5. Pls someone help me as you say that this is essential to do the oc.

Well I'm not sure if this is right but in my Not overclocking friendly BIOS on a Conroe Xfire eSata2 mobo I put the FSB on 300 so given that the multiplier on my e6600 is 9 it should be 2.7Ghz but when i check in CPU-Z it says its 266 @ 2.4Ghz. I selected the 300FSB in the bios and then saved it and exited.
Btw every time I turn on the computer it turns off after 3 secs 3 times and then it start, I dont think that thats normal. If this is any hel my temperatures are +-50 @ idle and +-60 @ 100% load.
PLS some one HELP ME !!!

your not so friendly bios is probably pushing up your ram above what it can cope with, i dare say the restarts are auto restarts until it admits defeat and loads default settings so it can boot again.

is there any setting to drop the ram speeds?

Well there is only timings that I put on a quite normal 5-5-5-15

Hello there I cant do anything with my FSB I set it to 300 or anythin even 270 and it goes back to 266 so i cant o'c my e6600 ..... this is really annoying. How can I change it so it will stay. I save it in the bios but nothing.

Ok so I put the default sttings back on and it put the ram at 6-6-6-15 and it works no probs. But now when I change the FSB even by 1 it does the thing where it turns off after 2 sec with a click and does this 3 times before it runs properly. Also I changed the FSB back by like 10 and suddenly the processor speed was 1.8Ghz then i change it to anything over 266 ( 270, 275,280 ) and it shows the speed as 2.41Ghz when BIOS is set to default it shows CPU @ 2.4Ghz.
Grrrr
