Btw maybe it has something to do with my CPU temps. 50 @ idle 62 @ 100% load. if that is too high I was thinking of getting this cooler : Komplett.ie - Akasa AK-965 CPU Cooler, Socket 775, low noise

or Komplett.ie - OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler Socket 754/939/940/AM2/775, 92mm Fan thank you very much guys or girls

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

Great thread My only problem is I cant seem to get access to the CPU or RAM frequencies in my BIOS ,
I have the ASUS Striker Extreme Mobo and loaded the software that came with it...........ie ProbeII , AI Booster etc , I've just uninstalled the features , but in my BIOS where your screenshots show "Advanced" mine shows "Extreme Tweaker" and dosnt give me an option to alter the frequencies.
    Processor is intel 6700 duo.

    Any help would be great

Clunk you are to be applauded. This is a great piece of work and you have clearly put in a lot of effort to the benefit of others.

    Thank you and well done.

I have a lot of computer and network experience – from running mainframe data centers to thousands of networked PCs to small home networks, but I have virtually no successful experience of overclocking. My attempts with my Athlon 3200+ with an Abit NF7-S v2 were hugely disappointing – so I gave up and just used the machine as a work-horse. I build quite a lot of PCs for people, but just build them neat, and run them at stock.

I currently run my ASUS Commando at 3G – all I have done is up the FSB to 300 to achieve this, and it is rock solid.

Given all the problems reported with Commando’s on this forum I decided to stop and push no further – however your guide has given me the inspiration to push on a bit more…..

    Thank you again Clunk

Was considering purchasing an E2220 for £56 and running at stock intially but then trying to overclock it. I have seen a web page saying that this can be overclocked to 3.6Ghz. I don't want to attach an iceberg to keep the CPU cooler (don't want excessive heat) and perhaps a 3Ghz o/c would be dooable but what tweeks would be needed for this?

P.S. I was going to buy a Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L iP31 motherboard and 2 Gb OCZ 6400 platinum ram running with a current (no pun intended) Hiper 525W PSU.

    Thanks.

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

Just got a new pc and was wandering if it was worthwhile overclocking?

CPU - Core2 Q9300 Multiplier - 7/7.5 Heard it is hard to overclock
Heat Sink - Scythe Ninja with fan
    Motherboard - Gigabyte P35-DS3
    Memory - Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2X2GB DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz 2.2V CL=5

The CPU has a stock speed of 2.5 GHz and i was thinking of pushing that to 3 GHz with out raising the voltage (setting ram to 1:1 and increasing the FSB). Is this possible or should i just leave it at the stock speed?

PS. Also i read that for your operating system to use all 4 cores of the CPU you need a 64bit os is that true?

need 64 bit os to utilize all 4gb of ram but all 4 cores you can use a 32 bit os for it.

It may well be possible! The only thing you can do is try. You should only increase your voltage if you need to, dont just increase it before trying it. My Q6600 does 3Ghz on stock volts, no problems.

thanks for the fast response moogle, think i will stick with my reliable 32 bit Crystal Xp in the meantime, as the os will still use 3.5gb of ram i believe.

Do you think it would be worthwhile overclocking my Core2 Q9300 or will i not get much rewards for the hassle?

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

I bought Socket 775 mobo and some Geil RAM for cheap and added a E2200 CPU for £50 about 3 months ago, cooled by a Scythe Ninja with 120mm fan and clock to 3GHz 24/7 and 3.44GHz for benchmarking, I think the low C2Ds are great value for money.

Re: C2D Overclocking Guide for Beginners

1.35v for 3.0GHz but I used 1.55v to benchmark it at 3443MHz. I havent played around with this setup I must admit as I use it for actually doing meaningful things on sometimes and want it to be rock solid stable, but when I first got it the aforementioned clock was the highest it would benchmark at with 1.55v - might do same speed on lower for benchmarking - I will try sometime.

A few problems i have ran into here, lowest vcore setting on the mobo is 1.325, seems high for the lowest setting? Its currently at 1.345 but cpuz is never reading it higher than 1.310~ not really sure what this means in terms of voltage limits and upping it some more.

Also there is vcore and vtt, both seem to relate to the cpu, havent touched Vtt, should I leave it that way?
