Intel & AMD to make big price cuts :)

"Intel and Advanced Micro Devices next month plan to unveil significant price cuts on their current fleet of processors as they prepare to go to battle in the quad-core market.

On April 22, Intel is slated to announce a 40 percent price cut on its current quad-core processors and significant drop on Core 2 Duos, channel sources said."

Cuts will be announced soon but according to computer weekly, they will only happen in about 6 months. Therefore, if you've just bought a new c2d like me, you know you'll have 6 months use or so out of it before your mate goes and gets it for 40 quid cheaper.

Not what I read, the cuts are supposed to take effect on or near that day but it all depends how much stock retailers have as to how quickly it'll filter through to the end user.

I was under the impression that the X6800 was being phased out soon anyway when the 1333FSB parts launch with Bearlake.

X6800 will become E6850 (3GHz/1333FSB) at a much reduced price.
Also rumblings of a QX6800 to bring clock parity (nearly) with the dual cores.

Thats strange. Everything I have read says the cuts won't be made that soon. Why would anyone buy a c2d between now and 22nd April then? Also, people that have just got one aren't going to be happy at the fact they have paid up to £120 more than they needed to. Is there any mention of a goodwill gesture from Intel to these people? It has been known in the past. I got a free game bundle from Microsoft when they reduced the cost of the xbox by £80 to compete with the ps2.

I reckon AMD and Intel must owe me mega £s for goodwill then dating back to socket 5.

In that case there could never ever be a price drop unless off course they stopped selling the items for say 6 months before.

As soon as it offers a tangible performance increase for the average user I'd imagine.

In the server area it looks like it IS being put as a selling point, the best feature to focus on is one your opponent doesn't have

Same way GHz, 64-bit, and low power consumption were all being banged on about at different times as company had a clear advantage over the other. If you can clearly show your product as being superior in one nice easy to understand metric then you can sway peoples judgement, even if they don't necessarily NEED it (what percentage of 64-bit CPU owners use a 64-bit OS even now*).

    * Yes I know on here it shall be a reasonable proportion, but I mean real users.
