PSU + CPU Fan advice

Well, the 350 watt generic spare PSU that I replaced the failed 400 watt that came in the system became very unstable yesterday.
I noticed the cpu fan was spinning at full speed all the time (I keep the case open at all times for extra cooling) and thought that it must be with the warm weather. Switched off last night to give it a break, back on this morning, same thing, except the weather was cooler here this morning. Only then did I think to check the PSU fan, and yup, it wasn't spinning. Have cleaned it out and managed to get it spinning again but gives up every 30 or so minutes!

I know I shouldn't be using a crappy generic unit, but never got round to replacing it properly. So, now I want at least a 500 watt because I am planning on getting an 8800GTS in 2 or 3 months.

Here's the rub....I have only about £35 to spend, maybe £40 at a push for the PSU because I also want to get a new CPU fan to replace the (bloody noisy!) Intel original. It's a P4 3.2, limit of about £15 - £20, enough? Any recommendations for either or both would be greatly appreciated.

You'll be lucky to find a good 500W PSU for £40. Specaltech had a nexus 500W for £43 http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cust...cat=161&page=2 but it's sold out. No idea if they're ever getting them back in stock. They have a 400W unit for a bit less http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cust...cat=161&page=2

As for HSF, people are forever recommending arctic freezer pros as being good value for money.

I would say, ditch the idea of the 8800 if you've only got a 3.2ghz P4 - something like an x1950 would be much more appropriate, and would leave you room to spend more on the PSU.

PSU wise, 500w is still a good region to aim for - perhaps something like the Corsair?

Read this before you press the buy button for the Coolermaster, cause it certainly isnt 600 watts

The Antec only provides 18 amps on the 12 volt rail, thats totally inadequate for a 8800GTS.

I think dave87 is probably right. The combination of your cpu and tbh not enough funds for a higher end PSU you would be better off following his suggestion.
