Surprised the scores aren't more similar given the resolution tested. But yes, if it's the same price as the 8800gts (it's competitor) then it's slightly faster, but you'd expect that given it's x months newer.

Not as fast as a 8800GTX, but then again you'd expect the 2900xtx to be competing there, not the xt.

So all things considered it's kind of as expected - exactly the right performance for the time of release.

Hmmm, interesting how they compared the 2nd line units rather than comparing the top of the line models.

Still, whilst I've always been an nVidia fan, I'm interested to find out if these ATi units have any advantages or differences that makes me want to switch.

I'm interested to know power requirement and how hot these chips run at. From the look of the picture heat sink doesn't look that much different from X1950XT one or is it slightly bigger? If it runs even hotter than 8800s then I don't think I'm gonna buy it.

Well, they seem to have engraved flames into the heatsink....

You guys seen the Anandtech review of the 8600GT/GTS? Going down pretty cold over there... sounds like they're not particularly impression with the nVidia lineup:

Coolermaster Stacker, Asus P5E-VM-HDMI, Windows XP, Q6600, Zalman 9500-AT

Specialtech now have the 8600gts for £115 which is x1950pro territory (taken all of a week to come down to that price). It performs around the same as an x1950pro in most cases.. So I say it's the midrange card it was meant to be.

I've got a 8600GTS in my HTPC and it's good for that application (well so far) but it's no hard-core gamers card (not that i've tried that yet). But it is passive and does have HD decoding..
