    4x2GB on a P5B Deluxe?

    Anybody running 8GB or know for sure if it works? If so, what memory? I'd love to fill my new system up while ram is dirt cheap, but with all the memory problems being reported here, there and everywhere I'd like to hear at least one success story first....

    well ddr3 will come out soon that is why ram is cheap and why would you need 8gb???

    512mb = general use on xp
    1gb = general use on vista
    2gb = gaming
    3gb = video photo editing
    4gb = cad
    8gb = small servers
    36gb = large business e.g. 1000 employees
    1000000000000000000000000gb = Windows server lol

    you will need to have a 64 bit os to run more then 4gb as well. what are your system components and what is the comp used for???

    Not strictly true but often the case for the average user.

    4GB does improve vista performance as tests have shown, 8 GB shows generally not much of a noticeable performance.

    As for memory type - check the Asus website and see what it says, or email customer support if it isn't clear. It'll probably be picky when it gets to that quantities.

    Unless you're doing heavy HD video editing or massively complex 3D models.

    4Gb is more than enough for the majority of people though. I'm happy with 2Gb at the moment.

    The OP just wants to take advatange of the cheap RAM, I doubt he'd ever use half of it. But yeah, 8Gb is useful for graphical workstations and servers.

    my server has 4gb (6400 though so faster then normal for servers) but I have edited the list....

    My home Linux server has 2Gb, but it only serves my house and a few folks over the internet, so even 2Gb is overkill. But if you're serving 10,000+ SQL queries per minute that would be another matter

    lol I mean the fact that it is 800mhz ram is a little odd seeing as most servers seem to use only 400mhz ram not the amount of ram. I manage 376 members and the most downloading/uploading I have noticed was 114 at one time may be higher as I don't often plug my monitor into the server unless there is a problem that a user informs me about this is intranet use though

    Thanks for your concern folks, but I assure you I'll be able to use all those GBs. :-) How about a whopping huge ramdisk to house the swap file and tmp folders for blistering fast access and writes? Or how about loading the games you play completely into ram and enjoy 1 second load times and no lag related to disk caching? The possibilities are endless I tell ya!

    Or they will be if I can get it to run.

    Edit: I'll be running XP 64 by the way and as far as the ASUS support pages are concerned, not many memory sticks are officially supported, nor ever will be I imagine. They usually do a small selection from the big boys and then leave it at that.

    *shrug* my RAM isn't offically supported by Asus, DDR2 memory is DDR2 memory, there's standards on the signaling for that very reason.

    I don't care if the ram I get is supported either, but I do care if it works or not. Theory is not, after all, reality, as I think a horde of 680i MB owners would agree with.

    Well that simply means the 680i chipset has a broken DDR2 controller, nvidia doesn't have the experience in producing those circuts, since AMD CPUs do that job for them.

    Being an utterly selfish bugger, I do hope you're right. However, it's not exactly an unknown phenomenon on Intel boards either, for whatever reason.

    I haven't experienced it personally, might be the odd person with a faulty chip though.
