    Wireless audio transmission

Been searching for a cheap and reliable means of broadcasting audio from my PC to stereos around my flat for ages. Wi-fi is overkill, as are video senders. Tried Arkon Soundfeeder.. but it runs off batteries.

Have now found the ideal piece of kit. Its a LineX USB stereo audio transmitter (model number AT-2011).

It uses a USB port which provides two important benefits - 1) No need for batteries, and 2) No need to pass the audio through a soundcard (which degrades the signal).

It shows up as USB speakers and will relay any audio coming from the PC, e.g. mp3, streams, over an one of 7 preset FM frequencies upto a range of 45m. Technically illegal to use in the UK.. but you could always take it on holiday!

    Price ~£20.

Where do you get one? On a well known auction site... did I mention searching for "wireless audio transmitter pc"??!

    cheers,
    dave

Nice one - when you get it, make sure the USB speaker volume settings (control panel->sounds, speech and audio devices->adjust the system volume) are as follows:

    Speaker=100%
    Wave/MP3=50%
    SW Synth=50%
    CD Player=50%

    cheers,
    dave

Cool, I do like that idea and never even thought something like that existed! But why would it be illegal to use in the UK? Is that something to do with laws about transmitting stuff?

It works a treat. You initially need to fiddle with the USB speaker volume settings to make sure there is no distortion and that its at the normal volume on your hi-fi, but apart from that its brilliant.

Crystal clear sound from my PC to any of my 3 other tuners in my flat for £20!

(and people are trying to flog products like this - http://www.homeautomation.eu.com/product/72)

    cheers,

Yeah - basically you aren't allowed to transmit on an FM frequency in the UK without a proper licence. The rights to broadcast on a particular frequency are owned by someone and they pay for the privilege.

The US take a more sensible approach and allow low power (upto 150m I think) broadcasts without a licence. I mean come on, how many radio stations are going to be going out of business because some guy is broadcasting 45m from his PC?!

    cheers,
    dave
