Did you do memtest?

If not, grab memtest v1.70, and run test 5, for at least an hour, on each stick of RAM individually in each slot.

If there are errors, take out that stick and put it to one side and try the next one.

I honestly havent come accross your problem before, so I am just going through a process of elimination.

It could always be a faulty CPU, or PSU as well, but check the RAM first

A couple posts up I mentioned I ram Memtest from a bootdisk, no errors after 2 hours. forgot how many passes it did. The CPU, I have no idea, I RMA'ed an e6420, Intel sent me an e6600 cause they were out of e6420. I think it might just be a bad chip, not operationally speaking becuase I am rock stable for 1 month, but from an OC standpoint. 3.0Ghz is cool, like I said 25% performance gain free. Ok, but did you take one of the sticks out, and run memtest on the ramaining stick in each of the slots?

Other than this, and the other things I mentioned, I'm out of ideas, because your settings are spot on, so something is faulty.

P.S. did you try the long CMOS clear?

Just printed out all of your overclocking guides (29 pages!) and am going to be working through them over the next couple of days. Wish me luck Hopefully I wont need to be posting back apart from when I have finished with a good stable overclock

Yes, even tried the other RAM slots. I did a 1 hour CMOS clear. At this point it could be anything including the BIOS (current) so who knows. It's a bit frustrating, I'll try when a new BIOS comes out. I think my parts are fine becuase at 333 I am rock solid in Orthos, memtest, occt, etc. Oh well thanks for the help.

At stock speeds my temperature was 46 degrees on each core at load using TAT to stress the cpu and Coretemp to read the temperatures.

I am now running my e6600 at 3.0GHz and this time at load my cores are both at 57 degrees.

I didnt really expect my temps to rise that much, but as this is my first time overclocking I have nothing to compare it against.

About what temp should I stop overclocking because my temps are too high? (ie What is the max safe temperature for an e6600?)

57c is fine, what you can do is set yourself a limit, say 65c, and try not to go over it.

Once you get stable, you can check what voltage it is using at the AUTO setting, and then set it manually to something close, and then gradually drop the voltage a notch, then test..but keep the FSB the same.

A bit like overclocking in reverse.

Also, I see you have the Thermalright Ultra, you can try a more powerful fan on it, they seem to respond well to that.

The other thing to consider, is that at some point, you need to find the fine line between the voltage/temps that you are happy with, and the performance that your CPU will give you at those voltage/temps.

Also, in Asus PC Probe the alarm went off because my Mobo temp reached 46 degrees (alarm goes off at 45 degrees).

This seems a bit low for an alarm to go off, but im not quite sure.

What is the highest temp that the mobo should be running at when at load?

I havent got pcprobe installed on this, im on vista x64 and last time I tried, it didnt work too well.

Try and blow a fan over this area, that should sort that problem.

Thanks for that, Asus says on that page the max should be 65 degrees:
"It is recommended to maintain your motherboard temperature of these three motherboards between 0 to 65 degrees Celsius to ensure overall stability of your system."

So I'm still within the reasonable temperature range even though Asus PC Probe was highlighting it as too high

Btw Cluck I think you can still check your motherboard temp in the BIOS under "Hardware Monitor" on Vista x64, but I suppose that will only be your idle temp, not your mobo load temp.

Yeah, its fine when in XP, I think around 36c, but then again, the airflow round that area is quite large

I think the Asus probe thing might default to the 45c warning for other boards maybe..dunno which, but as it does all the Asus boards, its a possibility.

How good is PcProbe anyway? Would an idle temp of 34/35c for a q6600 sound right? The mothernbaord is hotter by about 3c

Also should I use AI Suite or is it better to overclock in the BIOS

The problem I had was that the boxes defaulted to the large diamond shaped ones, and I couldnt see the readings, not sure what the problem was with that version, and on the previous version, a lot of the sensor info was missing.

Ill give it another go though cheers.

Probe is only good to give you an idea of MB temp, CPU voltages etc, its not to be used for CPU temps, as it is a mile off.

Dont use AI suite, its terrible, read the guide and follow it, and youll be fine
