Asus Silent Square Pro - Any good, other suggestions?

Hi,

Over the next few weeks I will be building/re-building 3 PC's. My current main PC which up until last weekend had an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro in it but now as a temporary measure has the stock Intel cooler in it as I broke the Arctic Freezer.

The other 2 PC are yet to be built, just waitning on the lovely guys and girls at Scan shipping my order so I can make a start.

My main PC at the moment is built around the Intel BadAxe mobo with a X6800 CPU, I will be moving this CPU to the BadAxe2 mobo I have coming and putting a E6600 CPU onto the old BadAxe board but am looking for a decent and quite coolers for both systems. Both housed in Akasa Mirage cases.

My final system that will become my main PC will be built around the Asus P5K3 Deluxe and the QX6850 CPU again I am looking for a decent and quite coller for this system. This will be housed in an Antec P182 case.

I was wondering if the Asus Silent Square Pro would be fine for all 3 systems, I don't plan to do any over clocking at the moment and just want to get all 3 systems stable at stock speeds. Will it fit ok on the above mentioned mobo's?

Anyone have any recommendations?

It will be fine for cooling..whether it will fit all the motherboards I can't say.

I can't rate the scythe ninja (rev b) highly enough.

It uses the standard intel design push pins so you have no compatability issues and uses a 120mm fan.
It keeps my e6600 under 20 degrees which is phenominal really (measured in TAT and Coretemp)

And I must say...sounds like you have some sweet machines going on there

A Thermalright ultra-120 extreme is the best air cooler around at the moment but the qx6850 will probably be a very hot chip so it might be a good idea to go water cooling possibly. if not a good fan like a scythe s-flex 1600rpm to put on it

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm not really wanting to go water cooled (not something I have ever looked into so not sure where to start tbh).

I had read a few things about the Thermalright ultra-120 extreme that seemed to suggest the bottom was not flat where it would make contact with the CPU.

Well iirespective of which cooler you get the odds are not all are going to have a perfectly flat base, hence the dark art of lapping.

I would also put a vote in for the Tuniq Tower 120. The central fan positio means takes less space up around the CPU . It produces some of the best temps around, gives good clearance over surrounding components and is easy to fit.
They are just bloody difficult to get hold of.

Instead of starting my own topic, think i'll pop in a question here -- how does the TT Big Typhoon VX scale up in cooling performance to the TR Ultra-120 ? I've seen mixed reviews: At TH the Ultra-120 comes out on top; at Hexus it's the Big Typhoon VX.

It all depends on what fan you use with the thermalright and what fan speed you use with the big typhoon I beleive.

If you dont plan to overclock the QX6850 would be a waste. The QX has an unlocked multiplier solely for the purpose of overclocking. I would save £££ and go for the Q6700 or even the Q6850

Hexus did a massive cooler review recently you might wanna take a look at.

I would have thought most solutions that use a 120mm fan will provide good, quiet performance.

I don't plan to over clock for the time being, just want to get the system stable at stock speeds. I may look at over clocking the system when I have a bit more time to play.

Just a heads up for anyone else looking at the Asus Silent Square Pro it will not fit on the Intel BadAxe or BadAxe2 mobo's. It also will not fit on the Asus P5K3.

I have now put Arctic Freezer 7 Pro's (or will when the second one arrives) on my BadAxe and BadAxe2 boards. Now need to look for a cooler for the QX6850 that will fit on the Asus P5K3!

Im pretty sure the thermalright 120 ultra will fit. as i think in the hexus reviews I think they used a badaxe board. it fits my in9-32x max with room to spare.
