2 hard drives?
After posting my "what to do with an extra £30?" Thread, alot of people said that 2 hard drives would be good, one for Windows vista and partition the other for games and apps. Thinking that this is a good idea, i've chosen this hard drive for Vista
and this for the Games And Apps I noticed that the "vista" hard drive runs in SATA300 and the "Games and apps" hard drive runs in IDE(PATA). I do not want to run these in RAID but will there still be compatibility issues? Also, how hard is it to set up 2 hard drives? I've heard alot about Master and slave drives but i do not have a clue about them, so any help will be welcomed. If any changes are necessary please tell me. My spec is this so far; Corsair 520w BFG 320gb 8800gts antec nine hundred Q6600 ![]() 2GB crucial ballistix pc2 6400 Asus p5k-e wifi Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System Black 17W RMS Samsung SH-S203/BEBN 20x DVD±R Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit OEM (DVD) Tuniq tower 120 Hitachi Deskstar 320GB Western digital caviar 80GB Thanks

Re: 2 hard drives?
Get two SATA drives. It'll be simpler to set up and install, no messing about with jumpers, and neater cabling. WD will have a similar capacity drive to the hitatchi. Worth getting the 16MB cache drives as well - the price difference is minimal.

Re: 2 hard drives?
Yeah WD is a good brand, and the 16mb cache is the way to go.
As for master/secondary, I am pretty sure that it doesn't matter. Also, there should be no compatability issues between SATA and PATA (IDE) (if you aren't running raid). And installing them should be a piece of cake. You can actually just take the jumpers off the back of a disk, and then it should auto-select itself. And usually you can just install them wherever and then sort them out in the BIOS. I've got three, so I just installed them all wherever in the PC, and I just made a note of the 3 different serial numbers on them. Then when I load up my BIOS, I can see the 3 different numbers. So I just move them up and down, until I've got the right one as the boot disk. Then you don't need to do anything with the other disks. They just appear in windows and you can start putting stuff on it right away. P.S. If you already own the PATA disk then no worries. But if you still haven't bought them yet, then getting SATA is the way to go, like kungpo explains. They are just better thanks to the cables and stuff. Re: 2 hard drives?
As the others have said, SATA is the way to go really, take a look at these for your second drive:
- 250GB Western Digital WD2500AAKS ~ £42.12 - 320GB Western Digital WD3200AAKS ~ £47.93 |
