Can I convert a three pin case fan to a four pin?
I have just replaced my motherboard. My new mobo has a four pin case fan header whereas the old one had a three pin one with a three pin fan.
I can connect the three pin fan to the motherboard but it means that i have lost the speed adjustment from the fan as the motherboard uses the fourth pin to control the speed. Is there anyway i can convert the fan to use the four pin controls? The case fan is built for the case so i dont think i can buy a four pin version. Edit: i dont mean a four pin molex power, i mean the four pin mobo header incase there is any confusion! Last edited by colincliff; 13-11-2007 at 09:14 PM.. |

Re: Can I convert a three pin case fan to a four pin?
What motherboard are you using? Most motherboards have the option of selecting between PWM (4pin) and Voltage (3pin) mode fan speed control.
And I believe there might a special chip within a 4-pin fan which allow the motherboard to control the fan, which a 3-pin fan wouldn't have.

Re: Can I convert a three pin case fan to a four pin?
You can set the smart fan control to use voltage rather than PWM (in the BIOS) although it should be alright set on auto...
