Newbie E6750 / P5K-E / 9700LED Overclock / Fan Settings

Hi guys

Going to attempt an overclock later with this hardware:

Antec P182
E6750
512MB 8800GT Zotac (Overclocked 660Mhz)
4GB GeIL PC6400 Ultra RAM
Zalman 9700LED Cooler

Just wondering if the above hardware is a good choice for an overclock?

Also, I have a FAN MATE 2, should I keep this on max RPM (2500 odd) during the overclock and while it's overclocked? It's quite noisy at full whack and I won't bother overclocking if I'm going to have to keep it at max RPM all the time.

What settings should I have the case fans on? I have the PSU fan on Medium, and the 2 top ones on Low, can I get away with putting the PSU fan on Medium?

I think it's more important to monitor the temperature of the cpu itself and then adjust the speed of the fans appropriately. I'm fairly sure you should be able to get a decent OC on en E6750 without increasing vCore and your fan speed. Use TAT or coretemp and just make sure that the cpu temps are staying within a reasonable level and then see how far you can drop the fan speeds to give you the best overclock/noise for your needs.

I've spent a while doing this myself, I use my pc mostly for music making and I managed a fairly easy 1.8GHz E4300 -> 2.9Ghz overclock on low voltage and pretty much zero noise from the internal fans so you should definitely be able to maintain a near-silent system and a good overclock on an E6750.

As someone has already said, use CoreTemp or Intel's Thermal analysis tool to get the actual temps.

On your processors box should give some sort of safe or normal voltage info so stay below that. Run the stress tests for over 12hours, some say. BUT be sure to monitor your temperature at least for the first 20minutes and if they're below 50C according to CoreTemp then your overclock is good, but still try for at least 6 hours.

Unfortunately CoreTemp doesn't work on Vista64, I can't get it working anyway, I found a batch file but the temps it reported were WAY different from anything else.

Got CoreTemp working and I'm using Asus PC Probe

Weird thing now is that the processor is idling at 42oC, and AS SOON as I press start on Orthos the temp shoots right up to 55, I mean instantly? Is that right?

I realise the temps are too high, 3.2 on air? That's rubbish!

The temps are fine IMO, ive got my e6300 running on 3.0Ghz, it idles around 38,39 and around 42,44 on hot days, when I stress it, the temp does not "shoot" though, but it goes to around 50-52 in a few minutes, then levels out. Im using air cooling too btw.

Ok I've got it all back to stock, Antec P182, Zalman 9700, P5K-E, E6750.

All fans are set to MINIMUM (Including the Zalman) apart from the PSU chassis fan which is set to medium.

Left machine running on desktop while I was in work and checked the coretemp log, Core1 averaged 30-31 while Core2 averaged 31-32

Just started using it now (Firefox, MSN, few Explorer Windows) and now the temp is at 31 for Core 1 and 33 for Core 2 (Sorry about the post before edit, CoreTemp was killed by me and left '40' in the systray.)

Surely that's not right?

Just to address the "shooting" temperature issue, when you stress the processor 100%, the processor is naturally being utilised to 100% , hence the other monitoring softwares, mostly ASUS probe start to "lag" where as TAT for example shows somewhat "live" temps, ASUS probe does not, it lags, the temperature is going up gradually, which is normal.

But for example, you started the stress test at 44C reading on ASUS,the lag starts since the CPU is being used to a 100%, when the CPU gets some time to give ASUS probe some juice, it shows the updated reading, which by that time ( in a few seconds ) has gone up to lets say 56, so you only see 44 and then directly 56. Seems like the temp SHOT up, but thats not exactly the case. Hope this clears the issue somewhat

It went up to about 60, Ive changed it to stock anyway, I can't get my head around all the terminology!

If I have 800Mhz RAM, then is a 400 FSB the best for it?

400 FSB is okay, but does not mean that you cant go ahead that than, ive got 667 ram, my FSB should be 333, but right now its 428. Depends how good your ram overclocks.

Well 400 FSB is giving me those high temps I reported, so I think it's best that I don't use that setting.

I'm going to try again tonight.

Is my fan pointed the right way? (see the picture above), surely that's right, blowing through the back of the case? Reason I'm asking is because I've seen it mounted so it looks like it's blowing out of the top port (The one with the spoiler) on the Antec P182.

Also, I have Vista64 and Ubuntu installed, can I use GParted to free up some space in FAT32/NTFS, go into Vista and assign a drive letter, and then install XP SP2?

Reason I want to install XP temporarily is because I would then have access to CoreTemp and the Intel TAT.

Also, how do I set up my Zalman 9700 so I can control it either with the Asus utility or Speedfan? It's the 9700LED model with the FAN MATE 2 controller!

You can get coretemp to work with vista64, you have to disable....Disable Driver signature enforcement....but some people are against it, so i wont go into it.
I am sure this works with Vista64 CPUID and gives me spot on the same as Coretemp reports. You should be able to control the Zalman through your Fanmate....Also try CPUID. This will show you fan speed, voltage, core temps etc..

I don't really want to use the fanmate, I'd rather use Speedfan or the Asus Util.

I think I have bought the wrong fan. The 9700NT allows you to use "PWM"? Whereas the 9700LED is 3 pin and therefore not?
