    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

I did something similar to my S1 when I had my 8800GT (fried it accidentally, it's being replaced with an 8800GTS 512).

88 CFM scythe glued to my S1

Appologies for the shotty quality of the picture.

That combo brought load (30 minutes of atitools spinning box) temps on my OCed 8800GT down from 93C with the stock cooler to 47C. Ambient temp was 25C, case fans were set to low. Much better cooling and slightly less cost than the turbo module.

Might replace it with a 110 cfm fan if I decide to use it on my new 8800GTS. The 88 cfm one came off surprisingly easily with a hair dryer and some WD40.

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

Heh. I was reminiscing about my mates old 486s at uni the other day, playing some kind of command and conquer thing and Blood, with the side panel off and a room fan blowing into the gubbins.

Edit: Update. Idling at 40 - 41 degrees c today, still fanless.

Played Bioshock, UT3 and Crysis for about 5 minutes each. Reached about 54 degrees each time (by the time I had quit to windows to see what everest was saying)

    @ Shooty*,

    Firstly, thanks for the pics

Can I ask how you scrubed off the gunk that the stock cooler had all over it and the chips? Was is easy?

Also what is the make and model of the ram sinks you are using, did they come with the S1?

    Thanks again.

    Peace

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

    *bow*

    You're very welcome.

I use this stuff here which I'm sure Scan or one of the others will have.

The RAM sinks DO come with the S1, but I replaced the sticky pads on them with some Akasa (I think) thermal tape, from Scan. The sticky stuff it comes with is, by all accounts, rubbish.

There is one RAM chip down the bottom of the card you have to look out for: the heatpipe from the cooler is squashing the ram sink into the chip. But it seems to be OK.

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

Umm Shooty* aren't the Ram sinks supposed to go on the other way around? (ie 90degree rotation) so that when you mount a fan above it, so that the air can move through them? (ok granted you're fanless atm but just thought I'd point that out)

    Also nothing on the VRM?

Looking closely at photo2 is it me or does it look like the stock cooler wasn't makeing proper contact in the center of the gpu? (the solid square of paste in the center of the paste on the cooler in square impression in the paste left by the gpu)

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

Hey Pob: re Ram Sinks: I don't know. I've always put them on this way, TBH. I think air will still run through them.

VRM: Whaaaaa? Um... no... nothing at the moment... should I be worried? I don't think the S1 came with anything for Nvidia cards VRM. It came with a honking great plate for ATI stuff though.

Re: GPU: You're probably right. Once I cleaned the stock cooler off, it had a nice finish on the bottom of it, though.

Where is the VRM in the pic, should it have a sink on it?

    Thanks

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

according to the paper that comes with the s1, arctic cooling claim no heatsink is required for the VRM. I didnt have any spare sinks lying around so I took their word for it. However Im running a 120mm fan on mine which i think helps alot

    Re: 8800GT third-party coolers

I think they are the little chips in groups of 3, at the back of the card, well I assume so as they were covered by thermal pads on the stock cooler and screws ether side to hold it tight against them.
