I reset my Bios and the NF7-s Died!

i flashed the bios of the nf7-s last week with the flash menu app, to the most recent version.

today i fixed up some fans and rebooted the comp.
after 5 minutes in windows with a normal post etc, windows tells me that the maxtor raid drive has become unplugged and that it may damage the hardware.
so i switch off, see that all the cables are very well fixed, and reboot.
i get a cpu overheat type warning, so i reset the CMOS, and reboot.
    no sound, just whirring fans.
i've tried everything and the board makes no sound, only beebs if i try to boot with the cmos dipswitch in the reset position.
anything like missing agp card or missing ram still produces no beeps, even with the maiboard out of the box.

the board is 2 months old, did i kill the bios or the mainboard even?

    What are you other componants?
Have you tried it without the CPU in?

Totally unplug it from the wall, take out all IDE/SATA drives and boot with 1 stick of RAM, CPU, GFX, see what that does.

How have you been reseting the CMOS there isnt a switch on the NF7-S's is there? as they need you to press INSERT. You tried taking the battery out for 10seconds or so?

I don't know about the NF7-S but when you clear the CMOS on other boards you have to make sure that you put the jumper back to it's original position otherwise it won't boot...

Dunno if that's of any help or not though.

If cars had followed the same developmental path as computers, a Rolls Royce would cost £60, get a million miles per gallon and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

abit forums have a thread on beep codes.

Does sound like an RMA though. Did you flash the right BIOS? there is a different one for the v2.0 boards to the 1.0/1.2 i believe.

Ahh. I get very jumpy as soon as someone talks about motherboards not POSTing, but the fans turning, as soon as 'NF7-S' is mentioned.

I had 2 NF7-S motherboards die on me, one after 3 weeks, the second after 5 days, both out of the blue. Both with the same effects - wouldn't POST, fans still turned.

Check that the jumper is on the right pins; if its not on, or on the BIOS clearing pins, it wont POST. Check the CPU and RAM in another board to make sure they work.

Something tells me this may be another NF7-S that's gone up the wall for little or no reason though.

If you want to try a BIOS flash but don't know any one locally I can do it for you if it is a V2.0.

tbh i think you didn't pull out the power cable/switch off at the plug when you reset the BIOS. If you do not do this, then the motherboard will die. You can easily tell if it is plugged in as the red status light will be ON when you change the jumpers around. This is quite a common problem and it has been warned to people

yes i think that it's definately an RMA. i've tried all the possible hardware tests, even turning it on without the bios chip to see if it acts the same as a diagnostic measure. it certainly still does.
thanks alot buff for the bios flash offer, i'll try and "hotswap" the CMOS with a running nF7-s to reflash it. i've a got a new one on the way before i rma this, so i'll be able to swap chips around.
there's been reports of CMOS corruption on abit's boards in similair situations, although i guarantee kezzer that i've never heard anything like he sais on abit forums, only that you can kill bios by pulling the switch when it is charged, which only happens when you flick the on switch, and even that is very difficult. i know kezzer will be on a holy crusade to prove that you can kill the bios by not switching off the PSU, but i'm still sure that's absolutely completely illogical information. you know how long it takes to be a power user??? if he wants to get some posts saying that it's more likely to kill a cmos like he sais he can do, but i think he's probably never heard of hotswapping you can actually pull a cmos chip out of a working motherboard and it is very unlikely to be corrupted, it is designed to be ROM by default, like a mini mmc card. next i'll hear resetting kills the OS.
the board or the bios is definately dead, perhaps someone knows if a corrupt cmos does this very thing. hotswapping is a last measure.
    thx!

oh yeah also the fact that windows said the maxtor sata raid "non plug and play" device had become uplugged and it risked damaging hardware before the system rebooted to a voltages error signal means that the board or bios was on it's last legs before i reset it. if the board will die from a normal reset then the board has a malfunction, the only way to kill a board is to damage hardware or cmos kezzer. abit would be taking alot of rma's in this caseand it would mean their mainboards are very defective. my last one was functional for a year despite rough treatment but it had a bad zif socket and very high temps so i swapped it.

Mines an Abit and like all my other motherboards, as soon as I pull the CMOS jumper off, the machine shuts off.

no no no. I mean when you reset the CMOS you should make sure the machine is unplugged but it doesn't matter now anyway
