Question How to correctly identify an Athlon

Right, somewhere I was told or read that my CPU was an Athlon 1.4GHz but I have a new mobo that can now put it to it's full potential and at the moment is only running at 10.5x100MHz.

I know to get it to 1.4GHz all I need to do is change it to 10.5x133MHz but I'm really unsure now if my processor is actually a 1.4GHz or a 1GHz. WCPUID only shows it as an Athlon 1050 (10.5x100).

When I get home, before I power up I'll remove the heatsink and see what markings are on the CPU (still at PussyKat's house) and let you know, but how else can I identify it?

    Cheers!

If cars had followed the same developmental path as computers, a Rolls Royce would cost £60, get a million miles per gallon and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

WINCPUID will only show it up as Athlon 1050, cos that is what you are running it at.. when you get home just try it at 10.5x133 and see if it works if not you've prolly got a 1ghz cpu..

looking at the core will also help you to work out what speed the chip is, it'll have '1400' on it if its 1.4ghz i think

Wcpuid will only show what it's running at at the moment, iirc the only way to find out it's true speed is to take the heatsink off and have a look at the chip markings..

    It'll be something like "xx1400xxxxx" if it's a true 1400

well if the default multi is 10.5 then its a 1400 as there were not any 1050Mhz athlons it would be a straight 10 for a 1gig

I thought that about the default multiplier being 10.5 but had to check. I didn't wanna stick it straight onto 133MHz just incase I done some damage!

I'll be home shortly to check it out. Have just bought a new cooler as well coz my little beast is running over 50 degrees C without much load. I know it's not fantastic but I bought an Akasa 824cu. Let's see what it can do!

Also, is it normal for the multiplier to be unlocked on these old chips? I'm gonna try and go higher than 10.5...

If its one of the old Athlons you can unlock them with a pencil

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

    Shuttle AN35N Ultra
    1.5GB DDR SD-RAM

Hmm, I thought I already posted that I sorted it... It's a 1.4GHz. Bought a new cooler the other day and when I changed it I cleaned it up and saw 1400 in the numbers printed on top.

Got it running successfully at 10.5x133MHz.

Can't wait to get a Barton!
