RAID controller differences.. hi all..i'm a total newbie when it comes to RAID..i just want to know..what r the differences between this two controllers : HighPoint RocketRAID 133 U-ATA/133 and ATA133 Software RAID 0+1 in terms of functionality and maybe performance. if i'm not mistaken both are indeed software RAID, right? why does the price differs so much then? i'm actually looking for a low cost RAID controller. any recommendation is highly appreciated.

i think the highpoint one with 372 controller thing is actually hardware, hence the increase in price... i have a highpoint 374 controller on my old motherboard, and i'm pretty sure it was hardware rather than software... tho i'll go have a look on google ![]() mark edit : highpoint 372 chipset info Last edited by streetster; 01-02-2004 at 05:37 PM..

i've been doing some reading about this n according to this article at Anandtech, i'm pretty sure both of them r indeed software RAID controllers. am i missing something here? please correct me if i'm wrong. the question still, will i lose performance by taking the cheaper route? is the HighPoint controller worth the extra money? thanks for replying

I doubt you will lose any performance - software RAID-0 is usually quicker for desktop PC's owing to the sheer overkill speed of the CPU available to the software controller (which doesn't need more than 5% at any one time - per benchy's such as HD-Tach). I haven't seen any reviews on the Dabs Value one - you might even find out that it's either Highpoint or Promise anyway (or maybe Via?) as they usually just buy stuff in bulk and re-badge it.
