High temp for my E6850

Hiya folks.....brand new to all this and have just succesfully managed to build my first self build PC...has work really well and am quite chuffed

system works well and even managed to change the bios without the use of a floppy disc!!

so being all smug wiv me old self decided to look into overclocking (used the thread on clocking for new ppl on this site which is very good) and first things first look at yer temps, and being a thorough sort of guy used several temp progs to check. My quick conclusion is that if i ignore TAT (which appears to be the odd one out) then it is running too hot and i dont have much scope if any to start overclocking yet ......

so my question is what do i do next??

the freezer 7 pro seems to be fitted tight and correctly and the fans provide a lot of breeze!!

do i 1) mess about with where the fans are, put in different locations (suspect not as the temps too high??), or try smaller fans?
2) re fit the artic pro and use new temp sealant?
3) buy better cooler and fit?
4) ANO!!!

TAT will be 15°C lower than the others it is to do with how the temperature is stored on the CPU it isn't a direct temp it is a difference from a set point TAT has this at 85 while for your chip it needs to be 100 hence the difference.

As to your temps being high they are high for a chip at stock speeds... my E6550 running Orthos for the last 27 hours has peaked at 58°C and that is running at 3.5GHz I do have a bigger cooler than you mind .

Personally my first thought would be to check that the cooler is seated properly, if you take it off you will need to change the thermal paste so make sure you have some before you do.

On the other hand the temps are within specification so it may just be that your chip runs hot and the is nothing you can do about it.

I have the freezer 7 pro on my Q6600 @ 3.0ghz and it ain't that high. Try re-seat it, make sure that it isnt too loose, one of the clips might be broken.

Also make sure your not having a weird push pull effect on a fan in there. Look at the PSU and how it is taking in/out air if it is near the CPU.

Also remember if the system is stable then don't worry too much, thermistors on board are of very bad quality.

Too much thermal paste would be my guess. It's a common mistake for a first build.

Freezer comes pre-applied though.

I used one a few years back when they first came out and mine didnt have pre-applied paste.
There was a tube in the boax of their stuff though.

Was pre applied paste so cant have put too much on.....

have checked out the fans and doesnt appear to be a problem, seems to be doing what they should (in fact temps go up if side fans off so must be doing something)...

have ordered some artic cooling compound and will give it a try...obviously not with too much like...

how do i get rid of the old stuff?? i have heard that you use nail removal (so at least the missus can be useful for a chnage eh!!!!)

I just use kitchen towel and a bit of elbow grease lol.

The pre-applied stuff is arguably the best to use though, are you sure it's secured properly

i have checked and it feels very secure...it wont push in any further!!...guess i cant really do much else except take off and re seat now!!

To clean heatpaste I use 100% acetone when it is really thick and tough (few quids from boots) some nail polish removers are high acetone content so will be ok... but they often leave a residue which is bad news. Isopropyl alcohol is the best stuff though, you get loads of it at maplins for like a 5er (i think) i always use this to purify the surface and make sure there is no residue left on whatever it is im cleaning.

i have used a few freezer pros in the past few years and in all honesty i have never seen one perform much more than 3 or 4 degrees better than the intel stock. Some people do seem to have had some really impressive results with them, gives me the impression that its a bit hit or miss.

I think you are about right.
Intel actually have good HS/Fans now. Just they are a bit loud.

The AC pro's arent OK but they are loud when running at full pelt also and arent too clever with good overcloks.

I read somewhere the other day that someone used one to OC their Q6600 to 3.6ghz. Maybe they did!
They also said it was at 42 degrees load..........thats simple pap......that cooler would keep a quad OC'd like that under 55-60 degrees.

I never actually used my stock fan but my freezer manages to get my E6600 to 3.5GHz with no real problems (that is with AS7 not MX-1).

It's OK but it quite loud for my liking and is on the list of things to change when I can be bothered.

Both the freezer and stock are only loud when they spin up, if you set the bios fan controller so they run on low speeds until say 45-50 degrees then they are both near enough inaudible unless your on games or something.
