    OK, I rebooted after filling drive E: (12GB) to .98GB free and G: (6GB) to 225MB free.

Upon rebooting, I found that the red alert two folder I'd put on (and run from) drive G: had gone, and a zero byte "found.000" folder had appeared. The other two (>2GB) files I'd put on were still there. Chkdsk found no errors on that partition.

Chkdsk found various errors on the E: partition, but recovered them successfully it seems.

I'm copying RA2 back to the G: drive (this is, after all, a drive I don't use because it IS FAILING.) I am then going to try to extract the rar archive to see if it's OK, then reboot and check the disks again.

So far I'm not sure whether these instabilities are down to the instability of the "mod" or the logic errors the disk controller has experienced (though since the mod I've not noticed any evidence of the sounds I've been having previously, which is rather strange.)

    I'll keep you posted.

WOW - This is interesting, although 512Gb is maybe a little optimistic.

Keep everyone informed Kez I've only recently upgraded to a 120Gb Samsung SpinPoint (which are great btw) so I'm not that bothered but got a few friends who would love some extra space for free

I've rebooted, and everything seems fine - no errors on chkdsk this time, and the RA2 folder is still there, lol.

I just ran a bad sector chkdsk on the extension partition and it seems error free. I don't have time to run a check on the main 12GB partition as it's a nackered drive and at about 2GB the controller will go nuts for about 5 minutes.

Anyway, so far so good (drive condition considered.) Long term stability needs testing.

I can't do any more testing tonight, but this weekend I will try messing with a fully working drive, as a nackered Seagate doesn't exaclty create a test environment under which all variables are controllable!

Still, by then I'm sure many others will have had a chance to perform their own investigations.

I use hundreds of those 30Gb Maxtor DiamondMaxs (cheap, fast) for review machines, I use them for storing all my crap on ... might have to do a test on one as there dirt cheap.

what the hell is going on ???

Did anyone see that sci-fi film about 3 weeks back where these 2 scientists created a full simulation of a world on a computer which they could download into.....only to find out at the end that they were a simulation themselves??

    I'm scared....

Well either this is simply causing a virtual drive within the original drive, or revealing the space that manu's are not making accessable due to either poor quality or *hopefully* needinng to knock out more lower capacity drives. ie like processor downgrading. I imagine if the latter is true we will see the most gains out of bottom capacity modern drives. just like celerons again.....lol Personally i wouldnt trust my data to one of these frankensteins monsters as data is life and drives are cheap. Bit of a laff tho
