I'm not sure what else I want to spend the money on at the moment. No, I don't really need more processing power than I've got at the moment, but.....!

    So its either i7:

    Core i7 920 £240.55

    Asus P6T £206.05

    3GB-(3x1GB)-CorsairXMS3-DDR3-PC3-10666-(1333)-240-Pin-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-9-9-9-24£76.36

    Noctua-NH-U12P-SE1366-Exclusive-Dual-Fan-CPU-Cooler-LGA1366-only £52.20

    Total of £583.19

Re: £570 to upgrade, suggestions please. :)

I don't need a case or the other stuff. So the alternative is:

    Phenom-II-X4-940-Black-Edition £190.77

    Biostar-TA790GX3 £82.80

    OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Gold Memory £39.99

    Thermalright-True-Black £40.12

    120mm-Noctua-NF-P12-Vortex-Control £16.43

    Totalling £372

Maybe I could get a bigger faster hard drive as well.

If you want to play games you'll need a decent graphics card. Will be anything from £100-400 really

Why would the OP need an entire computer??

The OP already has the following:

    Currently I have:
    Athlon 64 4000+ @ 2.7, 2gb PC4000, Asus A8N SLI Premium
    600gb (2x320gb SATA)
    XFX GTX260 XXX
    Seasonic X900 PSU
    Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case
    Samsung 275T LCD
    Windows XP
    X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Soundcard

I was making the point that the OP could have a Phenom II system for much less than a Core i7 system.

Re: £570 to upgrade, suggestions please. :)

I'm pretty sure now that i7 is what I want. For one thing I tend to think the socket AM2+ and DDR2 are dead ends, like socket 939 was when I bought my A4000+. So, next year if I wanted a little faster CPU if I had bought socket 1366 I would be OK, as that should be supported for years to come, whereas an AM2+ board would need to be replaced as well as any DDR2. Also, if I'm spending time rebuilding my PC and installing windowns etc I want a big leap forwards in performace in all areas and I'm not that confident in the performace of phenom II. As well, I'm thinking in a few months with an X58 board I can upgrade with faster and more DDR3 as it will get cheaper, maybe as much as 12GB will be within reach to go with 64 bit windows 7. 32 bit windows has had us all stuck at about 2GB ram for years now, I've had 2gb RAM in my pc for I think about 4 years now it feels like about 8 gig should be the norm by now!

This does mean that I will need to save ~£50 more, so I might wait a couple of weeks. I hope even better motherboards are out by then and DDR3 has continued to fall in price!

For 20 pounds more, you can get 3GB of OCZ ram with heatspreaders from ebuyer(not that it would much of a difference I think).
