    Abit NF7-s & Creative Inspire 5100 (5.1) Speaker Probs

Has anyone got an Abit NF7-s & Creative Inspire 5100 (5.1) speakers? I am in a bit of bother with setting them up and a bit of a 5.1 noob.

I am trying to set mine up but can’t get them to work! They are currently connected up according to colours on the 5.1 cables and mobo.

-I have told windows that it is using 5.1 speakers via: Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Advanced > 5.1 from drop down box.
-I have also attempted to set them up in: Control panel > NVIDIA nForce Control Panel > speaker setup (tab) but herein lies my problem.

Whenever I try the 'test tone' the rear speakers don’t work and I have tried loads of combinations from the speaker setup wizard. I know that 5.1 means 6 speakers (as there isn’t a 5.1 option) so have set it to that and that my speakers are analogue so kept all my settings to that too. Do I need to add surround effects from the menu? I.e. I have the following checkboxes currently left blank but I have played with them to no joy:
    - Dolby Surround Encoding (Yes)
    - Dolby Digital Encoding (No)
    - Create Centre speaker (Yes)
    - Centre channel 3D pan (No)
    - Create LFE channel (Yes)
    - Rear speaker phase shift (No)

When I run the wizard I get the following questions, which I have answered as such:
    1) Please indicate additional information about your analog speaker setup
    - My rear speakers are plugged into the Line In input on my audio device (Yes)
    - My centre speaker and subwoofer are plugged into the microphone input on my audio device (No)

    2) Select you listening mode from the list below:
    - Headphone (No)
    - 2 Speakers (No)
    - 4 Speakers (No)
    - 6 Speakers (Yes)

    3) Please indicate how your speakers are connected to your audio device:
    - My speakers are using a digital connection (No)
    - My speaker are using a analog connection (yes)

    4) Please indicate the configuration of your analog speaker system:
    - My analog speakers use a single input and are Dolby surround mode (Yes)
    - My analog speakers use one or more inputs and are not Dolby surround mode (No)

Does anyone know what on earth I am doing wrong? My two rear speaker arn't working at all

I have the same setup and problem. Sometimes they work, most of the times they don't

    question 4 you've answered wrongly - i hope, anyway.

the 5100s are plugged in via a green, black, and orange wire. you've told it that you only have the green (front left, front right) speaker wire connected, and that it should use Dolby Surround (a cheating tech which attempts to get something from nothing, badly) to give you surround

as opposed to all 3 wired being plugged in, and all 3 wires being sent signals

Cheers Hex i have just done the following:
    • 4) Please indicate the configuration of your analog speaker system:
      - My analog speakers use a single input and are Dolby surround mode (No)
      - My analog speakers use one or more inputs and are not Dolby surround mode (Yes)
But ....... It seems to work ok with a 'small' amount of MP3 sound or 'test tone' showing on the graphic equalizer in the 'main' tab. I'm guessing the graphic equaliser is not showing true results at all.

The problem is that the actual sound from the 'test tone' isnt working on the speakers. I get told 'centre' from the front left speaker and 'left suround' from the centre speaker. The 'right suround' tone is just a muffled noise that is coming from the front right speaker.

Iirc, the black & the orange on the NF7 are the opposite of those on the Creative - i.e. you need to go orange>black & black>orange instead of orange>orange & black>black.

Yep - had this issue on my NF7-S Rev 1 and Creative DTT speakers, and apparently it was common to a lot of nForce boards; I'll check the cabling when I get home, and post the colours.

Yeah - wish I had a quid for each time I've had to advise people at work on this problem. There is a utility called nvswap available from nvidia and this allows you to swap the "channels" therefore allowing you to use black in black, green in green and orange in orange. IIRC its more a nvidia fault than the manufacturers

lol I actually documented this fact about the abit boards and sound colouring back when I did that little guide for people over @ Abit NF7-S revision 2 information

Hopefully the NF7 II will not have this issue
