New Gaming Computer For £750

Had a look through some stuff after a few suggestions on here. I need to build a new computer (everything; monitor, OS, keyboard etc.) for £750. It will mainly be used for gaming so that is the priority here. Not really sure on which CPU make to go for in this price range, or the number of cores either. With that I'm kinda rusty on the motherboard.

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E7500

So aswell as not being to sure what to get I need to get the price down to.

For starters, get DDR2 RAM, that's 30 quid saved.

Unless you need the OS now, not in a few weeks time, and don't have/want the pre-release versions. That version of Vista does have the upgrade form, for when W7 ships.

You would save £20 if you could wait till Windows 7 is out though + it's the retail version not an OEM like the Vista.

Also, that Logitech mouse/KB is currently £33 (saving £5.50) in PC World (if you reserve online). t might not be much, but if you have one locally ....

Tbh i think you should really consider waiitng for the Lynnefiled based i5's/i7's if your going to eb spending that sort of money.

Personally i would either be waiting or looking at building the system around a AMD setup as they still provide better bang for buck.

Whilst im a fan of the hx520 (and i own one) they are seriously overpriced for what they are ! Purhapse look to see if enermax have something a little cheaper, im sure CAT will be along tonight at some point.

I would use Windows 7 RC1 and get the Windows 7 retail version in a few months time.

Also either go for the WB Black or Samsung F1 drives too.

The total comes to around £640 to £691. The Phenom II X3 720 build should give you around £110 to get an LX710 and a copy of an OS.

With the graphics card im not sure whether to go for the HD 4890 or the GTX 275, theyre pretty much evenly priced. With the OS i've just put down vista premium for the minute and will look into the windows 7 thing, i will be in a different part of the country when this is released so does anyone know if it is easy to install the retail over the RC copy?

You (or your friend if it's their computer) will need to do a complete clean install i.e. wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 7. It's not a difficult job, but it does mean they'll need to back up all their data, games saves etc. and then reinstall *everything*, so it's a PITA. On the other hand, Windows 7 is a damn fine OS, so I think it's worth the effort...
